Memory sticks combination: 8+8+8+8 V.S. 8+8+16+16

Howdy! I have a Dell Precision 7540 with 8GB + 8GB memory sticks. This laptop has four slots in total. I am recently considering an upgrade of memory however hesitant on which combo I should go for: two additional 8GB sticks or two additional 16GB sticks. In the first case, I will have 8+8+8+8 in the four slots whereas in the latter case it will be 8+8+16+16.

From a future perspective, it seems like I should buy two 16GB... Please let me know your thoughts!

Emm, it will be a difficult decision on the 16X4. That means I have to give up the original 8+8 sticks.

I'm using a desktop with 8x2 and 16x2 together for 48GB of ram, the problem is at the ram's rated speed of 3200mhz it won't boot, need to lower it to 2800ish and looser timings.

The biggest question is what you're doing going to need over 32? No? Do 8x4. Yes? Then it's time to explore options.

That's a good point. I occasionally handle large data set in which case the 16GB RAM run short. But in most cases, 16GB is just fine for me.

8GBx4 should be fine then. Do you know the model of whats in there already?

Yes, I do. Actually, the laptop came with only one 8GB memory stick and I bought the other one from Amazon.
