I am looking for a memory upgrade from my ballistix xmp ddr3 2000 8gb...
any suggestions?

your system specs would be a huge help. Also since ram is now near the 3000Mhz mark being sold retail, it is really up to you.

Looking at should I purchase faster memory or slower larger capacity. I was also waiting on Dave to chime in on his review on if faster memory is worth it on the haswell platform.

Why not just get the fastest/highest capacity RAM you can afford?

Obviously the things to look out for are:

Speed
Timings (high, low, tight, etc.)
Capacity (how much RAM do you want?)
Perhaps price if you're not known as Mr. Moneybags off of the internet.

There's quite a few newer kits out there for Haswell right now, most use the same IC's relative to performance.

My max is $150 if I am going 16gb there is 10% codes floating around for newegg, plus i have a $20 gift card from them and I can also have my wife purchase it as a new customer.

I thought all the tight timings aren't a big concern once you increase speed, majority of the kits are at/around the same timings.
Does it matter if I go 8gb or 16gb? I plan to game mostly, convert frequently and photoshop editing the other remaining % of my pc's usage.
I don't have a video card as of yet either don't know if I should go 770/780/7950/7970.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DD... - You want this.
2x8gb 2133mhz AND it does it at 1.5v which means you will most likely be able to squeeze some more mhz or tighten the timings if you set it to 1.65, i can see it has a few negative review but its most likely because their memory controllers just couldent handle it and they blame the memory,should have no such problem with your 4770k.

For $20 more you can also get the Trident X 2400 CL10s but they need 1.65v to operate. G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DD...

I wish RAM prices weren't ridiculous again, as I got a G.Skill Sniper 2x8GB 1866 CL10 kit that does 2050MHz CL10 for a mere $70 in November 2012.

Ideally I do like that but my mobo's theme is black and yellow so i would like to keep to that theme as much as possible.

My current mem runs its xmp at 1.65 I was wondering if i should try to get a lower voltage spec'd mem.

my rams timings are 9-11-9-27

Intel recommends staying with ram below 1.65V, but 1.65V is fine. Personally, I'd aim for 1.5V 2133 MHz stuff like what was recommended above.

As to whether speed makes a difference, I'm still testing that now, will be done soon. I could tell you more, but I haven't even looked at the numbers yet. :laugh:

I take it that by sometime in the morning you should be able to help me with the numbers, I think I am going to take the 8gb route. Now to narrow down speed..hurry up Dave lol.

8 GB should be fine, but that's basically my usage, and I top 8 GB fairly regularly, over 12 GB at times. But when I photoshop, I do a couple hundred images at once, have web pages open plus tonnes of other stuff too.

Also, on many boards, 4 sticks works better than 2.

thanks..i think im going gskill since you said they supp techpowerup. was considering the vengeance pro line but i'll give gskill a try
last corsair memory i bought were xms ddr2s 4gb kit for 122 and that was cheap at the time.

Initially I was going to pick up the vengeance pros but thought about my ballistix elites already touching the fans on my h220 so I went with a lower profile memory kit. I'm pleased with getting them for that price as back in 2011 I bought my 8gb elites for 85 on sale, not too shabby I guess. Now on to the gpu toss up between the 770/780/7950/7970 i was told to look at the 760s as well.
