MemTest error with all 4 slots

Hi all,

my build is composed by 4 slots of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-RAM 3600 MHz Kit 2x16GB (CMK32GX4M2D3600C18), 64GB of total available RAM.
The CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G mounted on an ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-E motherborad.
I'm experiencing some system crash with my Proxmox Virtual Environment so I run a MemTest to exclude memory errors and I got very strange results:

I've tested the 4 slots populated (I've just enabled the XMP profile in the UEFI that is 18-22-22-42 @ 3600Mhz) and I got 1 error.
I've repeated the test with 2 slots only with the same RAM settings and I've got any error (All 4 slots has been test at group of 2).
I read that some motherboard can't supply enough current in the 4 slots configurations so I tried to:

  • Increase the RAM voltage from 1,350V to 1,360V
  • Lower the speed from 3600Mhz to 3400Mhz
but I still get crash on Proxmox (Using memtest I've just repeated the test that gave errors in the first 4 slots configuration and it has been passed).
Do you have any suggestion to slove this issue? I spent a lot buying memories that could reach 3600Mhz and I don't want to decrease its speed too much but, at the same time, stability is the first characteristic that I would like to achive.

Many thanks for your help.

Drop it down to 3200mhz. The more DIMMs you have in, the harder it is to drive higher clocks.

For the Ryzen 5000 G-series APU's and the TUF GAMING B550M-E motherboard. 4xDIMMs are not shown as supported in the motherboard memory QVL. Good news is the sticks boot, that means you can try backing off the primary timing and see if you can get them stable. The only issue is that you may not be able to get 4 sticks stable reguardless of timings. You can try reducing the Frequency and see if that helps. Try 3200MT/s 16-18-18-36 1.35.

This case it could just be the motherboard. The ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING and a Ryzen 5000 G-series APU supports 4xDIMMs. ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING motherboard memory QVL. Also ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING motherboard memory QVL. Both support 4xDIMMs of this RAM.

I noticed that as well, they are a well known brand. I normally stick to kits that are Samsung b-die reguadless of memory brand name because even if the kit is not supported by the motherboard QVL, they tend to work anyway.

Through the years Ive had Mushkin, Crucial, and recently GSKill and all were never on the qvl and all have worked perfectly for me.

I'm afraid that when you have 4 sticks, the chance of XMP being fine is 50/50, at best. The small amount of errors suggest that the ram itself is fine and you won't have to do lots of tweaking.

With the newer Zen 3 CPUs AMD published their guidance (with the specs) and 4 single rank modules are rated to 2933 (double rank is 2667), so anything above 2933 I would not consider bad. I'd drop to 3200 first, as suggested above.

I can boot my RAM at 4200 CL17-18-18-36 and it errors in testing but I can't change the primary timings or the PC wont boot. Sometimes you can luck out. There is a working kit with the same IC's at 3200 16-18-18-36 1.35volts 4xDIMMs DS.

Thanks to everyone for the answers. I tried to increase the DIMM voltage from 1,35V to 1,36V leaving other settings as suggested by the XMP profile.
I was able to run a memtest without errors but, unfortunately, the system crashed after few hours. I thought that having 0 errors on memtest will guarantees system stability, I had to change my mind.
So if I understood well most of you suggested to drop the frequency to 3200Mhz but I didn't get if I need also change the timings to 16-18-18-36 1.35.

Regarding to Corsair I bought them thinking they were better than crucial, if only I had known...

RAM is 99% not the problem. you try to run 64 gigs of ram at 3600. that's even a problem with a 12900k in Gear 1. you could bump up the SOC voltage.

Keep your xmp settings and Increase your voltage to 1.40, that's what has done it for most people having issues with those corsair lpx. No it wont hurt them.

I already tired to increase the voltage to 1,40V but running a memtest I got many errors

So if I understood well most of you suggested to drop the frequency to 3200Mhz but I didn't get if I need also change the timings to 16-18-18-36 1.35.

I would recommend for troubleshooting purposes you just use board default timings, for now (you can tighten them if it runs stable at 3200). The voltage should be 1.35v or higher, yes.

On 4 sticks you need to increase the trfc and one of the other values to compensate (try 1000ns and if that works slowly lower it), also you might only be able to do 2666 without errors, so keep testing different speeds.

I waited two weeks just to be sure the system was really stable and it is. At the moment I kept the XMP settings but I decreased the speed to 3200. What do you suggest to try in order to reach the 3600Mhz? Have I play with the voltage or with the timings?

Thank you very much for the help you gave me.

I'm having the same issue, what ended up being the solution? I ordered new ram but I suspect it will run into the same issue.

Re-read thread. Solution is to lower the frequency or run the Infinity Fabric at 2:1. Dual rank is hard on the IMC. 4x dual rank dimms is asking a lot.

i had this problem too, just do as they say, lower the frequency. More sticks it's harder on the memory controller, there is no solution besides this one.
