4A Games announced the news over Twitter that they were excited to announce their partnership with NVIDIA to use RTX real-time raytracing technology in Metro Exodus. This set AMD Radeon gamers into a flurry, with people asking if it would work with AMD Radeon graphics cards.

Neat. I trust 4A Games not to screw this up.
I hope we'll see the launch of next gen nvidia GPUs with M:Ex bundled with them.

I have mixed feelings over this. More proprietary stuff that's locked up tighter than a Radscorpion's bunghole is not something I am looking forward to. Hopefully it runs well on Radeon cards too, and that AMD has a chance to optimise for it (Who am I kidding, it's NVIDIA..). If not, then that's the first thing i'm turning off in the settings menu. I'm hoping my RX 480 can do decent FPS at 2560x1440 with this game...

Isn't it a DirectX feature ? that is not nVidia proprietary technology.

Enable Physx = minus 20 fps.
Enable FXAA globally in Nvidia control panel, blurry mess ensues.
Enable RTX = minus 20 fps drop...

I could have went on more, but my coffee hasn't kicked in yet. lol

I also have mixed feeling about people that can't read. RTX is not locked up at all. Just some stuff built on top of RTX is GameWorks only. And even GameWorks runs also on AMD hardware.

That said, this isn't really news, since no card will be able to run this for next couple of years anyway :(

This is very confusing, but DXR is microsoft's api that can run on any hardware, rtx is nvidia's proprietary ray tracing feature used for gameworks and probably only available for volta/turing or whatever it is going to be called. Twitter post says :
"that we are collaborating with @NVIDIAGeForce, using their RTX real-time ray tracing tech ", means there's going to be proprietary stuff there, and I suspect rtx won't be the only thing. There'll be physx, hbao, maybe some other gameworks stuff. AMD will get destroyed in the early benches, and this will be at the time nvidia's going to lauch next gen cards. Once AMD gain acess to the code to optimize the drivers there'll be a hundred reviews showing them losing hard. All they'd be able to do is damage control, but only to some extent,as we said rtx will most likely be limited to volta only, not even pascal will run it.

Lol. I think even my 1080 is going to get hit by a wrecking ball at 1440p.

You got it backwards (again). Here's what Anandtech says:
RTX is essentially NVIDIA's DXR backend implementation

There's some stuff built into GameWorks that's built on top of RTX, but RTX itself is an implementation of a public API.

Well technicailly this might be true but I can't help feeling that anything rtx-related will take a much bigger performance hit on non-volta hardware.

Anandtech :
"And while only Volta and newer architectures have the specific hardware features required for hardware acceleration of DXR/RTX, DXR's compatibility mode means that a DirectCompute path will be available for non-Volta hardware. "

by "volta and newer" they mean post-volta.

Ah, so there's the misunderstanding. RTX is Nvidia's implementation of DXR and as such it will only work on Nvidia hardware. AMD will have to come up with an implementation of DXR on their own. Just like Nvidia's implementation of DX12 only works on Nvidia hardware and AMD has their own implementation ;)
This is not the next GameWorks, if that's what you were worried about.

As long as my Fury can handle the game with high textures, at least medium shadows, full effects and at 1050P, it could have a naked model come free with it and i would not give a single "F" more.

Great , can't wait to see what it runs like on a Vega, should be fine , i can't help but wonder if multi gpu the dx12 way could get pushed a bit more due to ray tracing, one can but hope.

You will, once you see how much better scenes rendered with ray tracing look. And by better, I mean closer to photo-realism.
Once we get enough HP to handle both tessellation and ray tracing with ease, games will start looking a lot like movies. Throw VR to the mix and we're looking (pun) at incredible, Star Trek level, things.

I think, based on the video, that we'll get something like this

for ambient occlusion: some basic ao like ssao, then hbao (gameworks), then rtx ao (will require volta to run at acceptable fps, slower cards will get too muc of a performance hit)
for shadows: low, med, high, ultra, soft shadows (gameworks) then rtx shadows (same case as with ao)
for screen space reflections: basic (on), high, ultra, rtx

You will, once you see how much better scenes rendered with ray tracing look. And by better, I mean closer to photo-realism.

there's going to be a lot of bitching if only volta can handle ray tracing at acceptable fps, but I'd rather have developers and nvidia push it rather than not use it at all, even if I won't be able to run it on my 1080.

Ray tracing means just that: trace the path of each ray of light throughout a scene. So if you've already traced it across the scene, only applying the effects on a subset of the scene (i.e. only shadows) seems like an incredible waste.
My guess is we'll get a choice between traditional and DX12 lighting, where DX12 lighting ignores/disables all other checkboxes and changes the look of the entire scene.

But that's the point, i actually won't.

3000 worth of GPU vs slightly downgraded visuals.. hmm i wonder which decision will win out, and graphics are not what actually keep me hooked to any game, or i would not be playing GT4 on my PS3 right now.

Yes but the video shows ray tracing has a few processing stages, and you don't have to apply those to all the elements of the scene.

Sounds great on paper, but the real paper has more of a say which is in most peoples wallets.

If you've looked at all the demos ans only saw slightly improved visuals, you need to see an eye doctor asap ;)
I'm not suggesting to upgrade to a Titan V. Not only is that ridiculously priced, but as I've posted before, first gen hardware never has the HP to actually drive the technology. But 2-3 years from now, ray tracing may become much more accessible.
Yes but the video shows ray tracing has a few processing stages, and you don't have to apply those to all the elements of the scene.
I haven't read about how this actually works, but my guess is the videos are showing the process stage by stage to highlight individual stages themselves (there's a lenghtier, ~25 minutes video that I haven't watched yet and must go into more detail).
I mean, what's the point of ray tracing if you're only considering 10-20% of the objects in the scene? You loose the natural look ray tracing is supposed to bring to the table.

Ray tracing was doable back on Fermi real time but it never went further than some little demo.

You mean this? you won't see anything this good looking at any point until the next iteration of DX i can assure you that.

Also a nice comment of that video.

"Nobody is going to get a game that uses this until at least 60% of gamers on Steam or 90% using Windows 10 (by hardware survey) have tech capable of playing it. By then, the technology may mature, and until then they have to build up the hype. With no hype comes no investors. They're maintaining their for-gamers image by releasing stuff like this."

Remember these?

Still not a single game surfaced with these graphics even now.. LOL.
