i am still yet to try 8. but am considering it. im still not 100% sure if after a few mods i can have 8.1 working just like windows 7 without any of that metro junk. if i can then i will try 8.1 when i can afford to. i dont know why they thought that i would want a layout like i had a touch screen.
It simply looks like cost cutting with development mainly centered around consoles and phones/mobile devices which was then released as a pc os.
that is something that i take as an insult. so i do have reservations about going to 8 or anything above 7.
i have had a windows os since windows 95. and dos prior to that.
Many of you should give 8.1 a try, whilst I certainly wouldn't argue that it's great I would say it definitely is not as bad as most say or Think it is.
I have used it for eight months now and have needed to search via metro about once a day, it's harder to find what you're looking for but not that bad, almost all useful functions can be got at via the explorer panel which IS massively improved on any other option to access for eg cntrl panel , librarys, folders and more are one click away , that and shortcuts mean I Am using 8.1 pretty much as I did 7 and it does mostly just work.
I couldn't get hybrid physx working that's all and im not bothered it broke easy anyway, get over the initial butt hurt and 8 isn't so bad (yeah I called it rotten initially , change bad).
M$ have the right ideas in some areas no doubt but insisting we use half the shit in metro when in reality you do not have to is one reason they have turned 8-8.1 into vista mk2.

Oh and I use it like 7 with no mods at all and no start menu (most stuff was always on shorcuts anyway as it is now)

There are still a lot of great games that come out for PC. The AAA developers/publishers are to blame for bad games, EA, Ubisoft, etc just make half broken stuff now. Its got enough tantalizing stuff in the game to make you want to play it but its so broken it ruins the experience. EA has always had questionable products but they used to fix it within a month or two with patches. If I recall correctly, Battlefield 1942 had a lot of problems when it first launched in 2002 but much of it was fixed soon after. Battlefield 2 was the same way.

There is also too much DLC. They used to release the smaller stuff for free and the larger stuff as expansion packs.

As far as Micro$oft I think Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 are great. Vista and XP were very unstable for gaming and I had more compatibility problems and crashes on those OS.

I got back into PC gaming in late 2012 after a 3-4 year break and it was easier than ever, Steam and battle.net and other providers made it a smoother and more stable process than it was in 2008.

I think we're fundamentally opposed on a few things here Ford. I've experienced Windows 8, and I don't think that it is unusable. The interface is poorly designed for non-touch screen devices, but that doesn't mean it's unusable. I choose not to buy the OS for myself, and recommend others avoid it to show MS that the OS is not acceptable. None of this means I can't use it in a pinch, or that it would even require more than a face-lift to be Windows 7.2.

As far as the phone, that's a joke. My experience with windows phone has always been on higher specification hardware. I'm not exactly sure what your experience is, but you seem to think that a $300 phone (off contract) is where people start. I'd contend that the no-contract phones are proving that people will overwhelmingly buy a $50 phone with a $50 a month plan (http://www.forbes.com/sites/tjmccue/2013/05/22/no-contract-cell-phone-plans-grow-in-popularity/).

Windows phone 7 isn't represented at all in any of the no-contract plans. It is gaining market share from Apple, but that's like stealing a lollipop from your sibling. Your sibling used to be cute, and get the most candy trick-or-treating. It's been five years since then, and the new kid down the block is much cuter. Neither of you have the market share you once had, and simply stealing from one another doesn't attack the kid down the block.

While Windows phone 7 may be the greatest thing ever, it isn't targeted well. MS says it's efficient, yet it isn't getting the shelf space of the latest iphone. They say that its integration is better, but most people draw an artificial bubble between the connectivity platform of the phone, and the ability to get actual work done on more substantial devices. It's this dichotomy that MS seems to not get, and be why Windows phone 7 isn't moving like it reasonably should be.

Back to the topic at hand, MS has no reason to release their console exclusives as PC port. Assuming MS wants to justify the Xbox as a worthwhile purchase, they have two options. The easiest is to have games exclusive to their console, or what is colloquially known as extorting purchases via taking games hostage. Their second option is to make the Xbox something more than a simple console.

Examining the first idea, MS has kept their games exclusive for this exact reason. They've had a Halo port years after the console release, and they linked Halo 2 to purchasing Vista for no reason. That demonstrates the ability to port games, but the lack of a willingness to do so. This is a self-serving decision. If the PC port of an Xbox game looked distinctly better, then why buy the console? One immediately hits upon some aggressive DRM, but if MS really wanted to make DRM transparent they could have built GFWL to work like Steam. Nope GFWL was broken, computer gamers are all thieves and pirates, and perfectly portable games languish as console exclusives.

The second idea has been painfully demonstrated by MS. When they began "selling" the Xbox one they started with how awesome it'd make watching TV. Following that, they sold the DVR features, and even the connectivity to streaming services. MS began the pitch for a new console without demonstrating the games that new gaming console would play. Combine that with a mandatory Kinect, unexplained forced internet connection, and basically screaming that the new console would be an HTPC and you've got a console that can't function as a console because it's too bust being a half-dozen other things.

I'd love to see the day when MS releases a piece of hardware, and their own paid for OS. That OS would have everything stripped from it except the bare essentials for gaming, and have each of those systems tweaked such that even a $300 vanilla box could play games a few years old without any problems. Their hardware could be a $400 PC, which would have profitability from the day the first one was produced. Despite their base console being the $400 model, you could install their OS on a $2000 machine and play everything beautifully on your 4K monitors. None of the modifications for that OS would even be very difficult. Bake DirectX into the install, remove the Windows UI and replace it with a modified Xbox dashboard (oh look, that console has a much broader purpose), have updates silently install during idle times (similar to Steam), allow store integration (initially offer Steam and Origin, but eventually expand the selection to other stores) for your own profitability, and make all of this a 64 bit exclusive to spur developers to continue development of software that will require new hardware to run it.

Of course, this whole idea is the Steam OS. Valve stumbled on it first, and they're trying to make it work with Linux. While I applaud the effort, MS could quash them with a new gaming OS that any idiot could install in half an hour, would cost as much as a game, and have access to all the games released in the last decade. MS wouldn't have to fight the battle of developing software for their OS, because they already have a death lock on the history of the gaming industry. MS has failed to realize this for the last several years, and priced themselves out of the competition by offering $130 (assuming you buy an OEM license, more if you buy retail) OS options which make a mid-range $400 gaming rig a near impossibility. If the people at MS could divorce themselves from their own corporate culture they'd be making even more insane amounts of money.

That's a bit extreme, isn't it? I mean you can USE Windows 8 out of the box, and if it were your only way to get online, you can bet the world would and could (heck, some MS-fanboys even did). I'll grant you it's annoying without mods, but it is usable. It's not like you are running OS/2 today or something...
Truth be told, I'd rather use DOS.

Back in the day some freaks installed Windows Server editions instead of Workstation/Home to get "rid of bloathware"... So nothing really has changed for them. :)
But you will realy love the Live tiles and Charms bar, really :)
I have Windows Server 2012 R2 on my server. Luckily, I don't have to leave the desktop very often but I did yesterday to start Nero Express. It drove me nuts. Metro does not belong on desktops, period.

...it's harder to find what you're looking for but not that bad...
The very definition of unusable. In terms of finding buried stuff like Network Adapter properties, it's a nightmare. It was bad in Windows Vista/7 too. Seriously, Microsoft lost grasp of what "control panel" means. It's like those stupid phone robots that make you answer 20 questions before you can talk to someone that actually can fix the problem. The Windows NT 6.# UI is the same way. It's infuriating.

Windows phone 7 isn't represented at all in any of the no-contract plans.
That's because US carriers don't sell the cheaper models offered in India and other parts of the world. Can't blame Microsoft for that.

OMG yes, whoever thought integrating metro in a friggin SERVER OS was full on retarded. I have that on my home server PC as well and I try and avoid having to use it like the plague. Although the launch pad thing works ok and automatic backups seem better than before.

^THIS is why I have stayed with WHS 2011...I have a proper dashboard for the server and don't have to mess with a metro UI when I want to do something in the server. Plus it just plain works unattended for what I want it to do.

Anyone know if the first Gears is still playable on Windows now that GFWL is gone? I recall that any games that didn't have some sort of patch were not going to work anymore.

i would love to have forza on the pc.
but that would give me 0 reason to buy an xbox then..

that is exactly why they don't release it on PC to begin with, or any of their Xbox exclusives for that matter.

And that's what Microsoft apparently hasn't realized yet. They can sell an HTPC running Windows that could be upgraded to run games just like they did with the Surface. There's never been a reason for Xbox to exist and there still is no reason for Xbox to exist. If Xbox One continues to disappoint, maybe they'll finally figure that out.

Is it because of the games or is it because of the hardware? I bet it's the games and Microsoft already has other places they can move those games to Windows without losing audiences. Not to mention, the peripherals for Xbox could be redesigned to work with Windows and their software can still use them. They could also push for four player controller support in AAA titles so an HTPC could literally replace consoles in the living room.

These are things virtually everyone here would like to do. The problem is that Microsoft has a business mentality and not a consumer mentality. This is what happened when Ballmer (a business minded person) took over from Gates. It stands to reason that Gates left Microsoft because he saw Ballmer's vision for the company and knew it was going to result in poor products.

I almost puked when I saw this commercial yesterday...

This is what happens when you hire a TV star (that sucks at gaming no less) to be a spokesperson for your gaming system. I lost a lot of respect for Aaron Paul seeing this.

The outtakes not included in the commercial were quite a bit funnier, but I assume MS didn't want it to be obvious that they were hiring essentially a non gamer just to make their POS Xbox look good.

Oh, I saw that commercial (don't remember what channel) and I explicitly remember going back on the DVR to watch it in full because the little part I caught at the end looked fishy. Was not impressed with that ad. Considering I did a double-take, that must mean it was awful.

that is exactly why they don't release it on PC to begin with, or any of their Xbox exclusives for that matter.
thats what i said lol.. or at least implied.

I had a 360. with all the forza games a repeat 12 month subscription and a MS FFb wheel.
i did not have any other games or even a controller.
so the plan dose work. but when we stopped having our forza night, "was every monday evening" i just sold the console.
its a lot of money to pay for 1 night a week of good fun with friends. but it was still a lot less than i would spend in a year going out drinking 1ce a week.
but i wont buy a console this generation. hoping that pc racers will get a bit better and drop some money on a good ffb wheel. "not friend tech expensive but Logitech or something)

Microsoft won't release games on PC because of a couple of reasons, both have to do with money. They collect a license fee from any game published on the Xbox, plus they have successfully monetized online multiplayer. When they tried to monetize online multiplayer on PC they were met with much resistance.

It make zero sense that they wouldn't release Halo: MCC on Windows, it would be the perfect time for it and I'm pretty sure it would go a long way to improve their image among the PC gaming crowd.

"Hai gaiz! We know we've been real dicks about putting our games on our OS, but we had 343 Industries revamp and revitalize one of our most beloved franchises, many PC players never got to experience it and we think it would really, really rake in the dough! I now present Halo: MCC for Windows 7/8!"

And there was much rejoicing.

That's pretty much all it would take for me. That and Gears of War and I would be fine. That's pretty much all MS gaming is anyway. Not sure WTF all the fuss is about.

its almost impossible to make people pay for a online subscription for a pc gaming service unlesss its a MMORPG. you can try to get a single server like steam and then try to charge for that.. but pc gamers generally wont stand for being ripped off to much.
consoles is a bit easier because they do only have 1 server. and the encryption for xbox live is really good honestly. its based on the same one they had on the original xbox, and its still hasnt been broken so we dont have a genuine fake server for the original xbox. (you can do network link games via tunnels but thats not the same at all)
because they do have a simple monopoly of "if you want to play online then you have to pay extra" people do pay it.
but its not game specific either its 1 hit and all your games work then.
with a pc they set it up as a per game subscription. and if yu have a good cataloug of games then it would be rediculously expensive.
You also cant just say pay steam and then use that because other companys like MS would want a bigger slice of the action.
In reality if they did want to go via a subscription rout, ms should work out a licence with steam for Direct x rights. allow them to use it as an api on steam os. and then steam would charge a REASONABLE yearly subscription.
That is a method that would work. But if its not encrypted well enough it would just end up with fake servers instead.

so the current method of Buy our dlc! £10 for this snazzy hat! is the way they go.
its not a guaranteed revenue, but its something. i dont buy the pc gamers are huge pirates argument.
console gamers are the same. a pc gamer will generally buy a game to play online even if they pirate some. they will buy a decent game to play online.
console gamers will just hack the console. and once thats done they copy the games from the internet patch them and can play online.
in general a console pirate has No reason to buy a game at all. a pc pirate generaly needs to buy a game to play online. (the new diablo is a good example)
i would say steam games are also a good example. but they arent really. battle.net is a better protected service.. Any game that has a well protected service with very good encryption so you cant easily fake the server and needs a valid cd key to allow you to log in to the game will generally slow down most pc pirates as for the most part all they do is download some one elses stuff and then ask things like "i dont see an exe file, how do i open a iso?" and arent likely to sturggle through complicated instructions about changing host addresses and so on.
But like i said a console gamer, just puts a patched game in the console and are off.
this in its self is the reason why i ONLY play console games online with a group of known friends. i dont want to go play with unknown people with modified game files.
atleast with the pc versions if your playing on an official server chances are the game files are checked. but you do get a bunch of cheats too They however will get banned. and you usually chose a server based on ping, players and game types. good servers are pretty much always good servers. the same people play on them and the cheaters have usually been banned both by game and ip address.

MS is doing some things right. They've lowered the price of the Xbox One to $400 without connect. There's also some talk of making past Halo games for the Xbox 360 playable on the Xbox One in the future. They have trouble getting out of their on way at times but they are getting some things right for their console gamers. MS has not showed us PC gamers much love though. That's why Gabe Newell got so worked up about Win 8 or 9 possibly becoming a walled garden for the Windows Store and came up with the Steam OS and Steambox ideas.

I really have to ask this to yall, do we really need Microsoft to show so much attention to the PC world? I mean they are trying to finally update DirectX 11 to a better point with 12 which is coming on PC and Xbox ONE. But anyways I really do not think Microsoft has to intervene much in the PC world, most game companies making multi-platform will put on the PC as well as anything else so really its just the exclusives that are holding onto things. Microsoft wants the console to be a success As does Sony want their's so if anything its no different in that world. The average Joe is not going to invest 1K+ into a gaming PC when a console is more plug and play (For the most part) because they want simplicity and Microsoft, along with Sony and Nintendo know this hence why console still and will exist.

Microsoft does not need to help PC people out much, the games will still come, steam still shoots out tons of games and we have a humongous market for our PC's in a selection of games including more and more PC only games all the time which are starting to even outshine consoles. We will keep getting more and more games in the future and they will look better than consoles, which in the end is the dream of a PC gamer right :p.

What grinds my gears is how Microsoft Studios bought out all these fantastic PC game companies like Lionhead Studio and FASA Interactive and then tasked them to make Xbox exclusive titles. Most of these companies fell apart too or had an exodus of employees because maybe they didn't want to be making exclusives for Xbox. There will never be another good MechWarrior title because of Microsoft Studios. There will never be Black & White 3 because of Microsoft Studios. These franchises were exceptionally good and very profitable but Microsoft Studios killed them because they're not suitable for Xbox.
