Not much else to say. Above is a statement from M$, and all that's left is to watch another couple of indie studios dissolve....

This might be very good especially for Obsidian. Its a company with some... well, shaky leadership to say the least. Their games also reflect this. Its good, but there is also a lot of untapped potential, its always a mixed bag really. Look at Tyranny, look at Pillars. Some ideas are brilliant, others make you scratch your head with a mix of confusion and amazement.

The good/great parts of Obsidian are its workforce, not its management. Given strong leadership and a nice bag of money, I think its a win-win here. I just hope they will still be making RPGs.

Does this kill any and all possibillity of a new Fallout title? And will the newly developed games be tied to Microsoft Store? Many questions, I just hope for the best.

What?

Unless I have lost my mind, Obsidian only made one game or Fallout title for Bethesda. That was a contract to make FNV. Funnily enough, I believe a majority feel that is the best in the series.

Anyway, Fallout brand and development belongs to Bethesda, so this won’t affect the series at all (other than leaving us with mediocre Bethesda Studio-produced Fallout games).

Yea I didn't fully write what I meant to say. I meant another title developed by Obsidian, not a Fallout title in general, because as you said New Vegas was among, if not the best "modern" Fallout experiences.

Well, MS said they will operate autonomously, and the presser also talks of now 13 distinct studios. So, we shall see.

My whole worry is that we’ve lost them to PC gaming, as Microsoft goes on about Xbox exclusives being even more possible now.

My whole worry is that we’ve lost them to PC gaming, as Microsoft goes on about Xbox exclusives being even more possible now.

Unlikely because their staple is RPG and then the deeper kind of RPG, not exactly something the console was ever good at and certainly not the main place for its target audience. In addition MS also started getting vocal about Windows and gaming lately and how they are going to improve their Store. MS may want exclusives, but really, I think timed exclusive is as far as they'll go. I also think that their idea of pushing their Store as a place to go to is going to fail miserably, its another one of those half-assed attempts and the current state of it shows that in every way. Its horrible.

The company is torn between two philosophies here: 'one' experience irrespective of the device you use, versus economical benefits of exclusive content for the Xbox platform. With timed exclusives they can leverage both, at least for now. To be fair I don't see Xbox as a very viable product altogether in the long run. It creates differentiation where there isn't any if you consider what MS wants to offer.

Microsoft wants a cut of Wasteland 3.

Obsidian is tougher because a lot of their work was contract...
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords was contracted by Lucas Arts and Bioware
Neverwinter Nights 2 was contracted by Bioware
Alpha Protocol IP is wholly owned by Sega even though it was Obsidian's original content.
Fallout: New Vegas was contracted by Bethesda Softworks
Dungeon Siege III was contracted by Square Enix (owns IP due to aquisition of Gas Powered Games rights)
South Park: The Stick of Truth was contracted by Ubisoft whom has license to South Park video games
Pillars of Eternity original IP by Obsidian. Published by Paradox but Paradox doesn't own rights to IP.
Skyforge was contracted by My.com
Tyranny appears to be an original IP by Obsidian.
Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire appears to be an original IP by Obsidian.

So...Microsoft bought them either for contract work in house or because they wanted Tyranny and/or Pillars of Eternity. The rest is off limits to Microsoft.

I have pretty much always liked the story side of there game's, and there is as you call it untapped potential, how ever MS have proven over many time over just hog rights to games and killing them.

MS enjoy putting shit on low burn for a loooong time.

Shame to about Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire i have only heard good things about that game.

MS went on hiatus of buying game companies for a long time. Now they bought out 5 in rapid succession. I really don't know what their end game is.

Console only, what else. Al about their xbox as they have proven it's not about PC gaming for many years now.

inExile is pretty much in the same boat, given that the only successful project was a kickstarted Wasteland 2 (which I had no chance to play yet).
Maybe MS acquisition will keep them afloat for a while, and maybe result in some good RPG titles.

P.S. I want a good Bard's Tale reboot!

Bethesda would never license it. It's not even clear why Obsidian was contracted to make it in the first place. Maybe Skyrim was taking more work than they anticipated and they felt like they had to invest in keeping Fallout relevant in the interim. Fallout is well established now so I doubt another opportunity will present itself.

Always the potential, but I guess when it comes down to it, I trust a smaller, indie studio to provide a better game for the money than a large conglomerate company. As for the Bard's Tale reboot, I don't remember when I've looked forward so much to a game, and been so disappointed....

I'm meant something funny and beautiful as their 2004 title. Have it somewhere on DVD )))
Their first loot joke was enough to make it my favorite RPG of all time (after Morrowind):

IF anyone here is naive enough to think that Microsloft won't use it's bulging checkbook to do whatever it is that they want to accomplish with these acquisitions, then perhaps you should submit a bid for the oceanfront properties I have for sale in Topeka, Kansas and Chargrinsville, Alabama. I promise to give you the forum member's discount ....o_O:nutkick:

In other words, contracts, IP, CBA's, copyrights, patents etc can ALL be bought out, IF you have enough moohlah and lawyers, both of which I am fairly certain M$ has in abundance......

Console only, what else. Al about their xbox as they have proven it's not about PC gaming for many years now.
I don't think they'd mind if stuff goes into their app store. They've been trying to jumpstart that revenue source for years.

That's why I said "New Vegas 2" as a quote. ;)

To be honest, I've never been a fan of the TES series, so NV was something awesome. And well, it still is.

I did some digging and Wasteland 3 + Pillars of Eternity III are both slated for Xbox One launches. I think that's the primary motivation behind the buyout. Both studios likely wanted investment from a publisher, Microsoft offered to buyout, and they took it. Games like those cost many millions to make--more than they raised on Fig even though those numbers were substantial.

This is not good. I shall stay dubious and questioning until Microsoft proves otherwise.
