Microsoft to Cut Xbox 360 Price by $100

Microsoft is planning to cut the retail price of its Xbox 360 Pro System from US$399 currently to US$299 in an attempt to compete with the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which will be launched by Sony in November of this year. Microsoft has negotiated with Taiwan-based part manufacturers to cut the total production cost by 15-20% along with increasing production scales and decreasing defect rates. Microsoft also plans to equip its Xbox 360 Pro console with an external HD-DVD drive in the future for under US$399. There's no more information at this time.

Shouldn't even bother releasing the ps3 now.. they were screwed before.. letalone $100 less on the price of the xbox.. as the ps3 was struggling to compete with as it was..

I'm sticking with Nintendo, even though i have all three (Xbox, PS2, and GCN) Nintendo is still the best, especially for party-like games...Nintendo is the best, just to have fun, not to compete.

I doubt the whole "price negotiation" thing to be a rumor, but the price reduction may be.

Having consoles produced much cheaper will not only increase the profit m$ will make from the units sold, but will give them wiggle room when or IF sony decides to play the price game.

Sometime ago someone posted that microsoft is going to change the cpu of the Xbox 360 to reduce the noise and improve temps.

Yeah, they're supposed to make it smaller so there's less heat and power produced by it, and they can make more per wafer...they're supposed to have it by 2007...besides that, not much of a difference I think.

a Die shrink like azn mentiond would do all of that.. but it isnt really a "cpu change" more of an upgrade, as its basicly the same CPU..

sony's ps3 is essentially screwed out of the gate now.

sorta reminds me of an obcenely overpriced version of the gamecube, in some strange way.

GameCube is a really good console, and as well as other Nintendo consoles, and I think Nintendo Wii will be great too.

i like the console personally, but i'm irritated at the game selection.
none of the new games come out for gamecube. mostly because i don't think its powerful enough to handle it.

but i'm looking forward to the wii. should be schweet.

Its plenty powerful, but the current user base doesnt justify much of the porting. :shadedshu

The Wii however.. should change things.

most likely.

keep in mind tho, that the gamecube runs a 485mhz intel gecko (its essentially a slightly modified IBM G3 processor), the "flipper" 168mhz ati gfx card, 81mhz dram, a bank of 24mb and a bank of 16mb aux.

compare that to the xbox: 733mhz intel coppermine cpu, 233mhz nvidia gpu based off a hybrid geforce3/4 design, and 64mb ram @ 200mhz.

So spec wise, the xbox could handle the xtra power.

so some games, say, burnout, most likely couldn't run on the gamecube, even if they ported it.

thats my reasoning anyways.

They can cut the cost of an XBox 360 all they want, hell they could give them away for free and I wouldn't buy one.

Console gaming is for idiots these days, because of the way the companies shaft you constantly with rushed out products and trend changes. & not forgetting the confusion in what the actual product is for or supposed to do.
