There will be six different versions of Windows Vista, not eight as mentioned before. Microsoft Corp. today announced the product lineup of its upcoming Windows Vista operating system. Scheduled for release later this year, the Microsoft Windows Vista product lineup will bring clarity to customers’ digital world by helping them easily accomplish everyday tasks, instantly find what they want, enjoy the latest in entertainment, improve the safety of their personal information, stay connected at home or on the go, and help ensure PCs are up-to-date, more secure and running smoothly. The Windows Vista product lineup consists of six versions, two for businesses, three for consumers, and one for emerging markets: Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Starter. The number of offerings is the same as the number of offerings currently available for Windows XP.

Don't know which one I'd want to go for... Windows Vista Premium sounds like the OS that includes all of the features you need. Just wondering whether Vista Basic is good enough. Just hope MS try to finish Vista, don't want my operating system to come with security flaws and bugs - i shouldn't be forced to download 80MB of updates every time I want to do a clean install of windows like I do with XP nowdays.

Wow - three/four flavors of Home? It's going to take a while to decide... and what, pray tell is "Ultimate"?

probobly most people will get it off p2p or pirate copies and have ultimate edition,

the other thing is that that i´ve heard is that the install DVD will include all 6 versions, and will install the correct one depending on the license key you enter, that way you can but the basic home version, and if you want more, you can later buy another key off microsoft and use the same installation package you bought off the shelf or came with your computer and unlock the features with a new serial number and activation.

Oh and about your update worries...

go and download a "slipstreamed" windows xp sp2 cd. heck pick up a repack.

    get "azureus" torrent client
    go to "newnova.org" > apps >windows
get "Windows XP Pro SP2 2006-02-04 DVD" if you have a dvd
or one of the other sp2 disks.
    Burn and install

most have been modified to make windows run better and the one above contains all updates and the most popular drivers up till the date shown.

When i install i only have 4 MB of updates left and i don't even need to install my mainboard, raid, video or sound drivers because they are all on it and the newest ones.

oh heck ill just post it all

    *removed on good advice*

Illegitimate keys for XP are pretty much dirt now... you cannot get updates without a legit one... although I'me sure in every other country, like Russia and China they have found a way around that :) - But what the heck was that all about, anyway!!??????

Id be surprised if even 10% of the users here have a legal XP license.

i'm gonna have to agree with you on that one, but its still something that should not be brought up in the forums IMO...
especially stuff like posting links to pirated copies and non-legit keys...

I've heard that too - I reckon that could be a risky move by M$. Could make it much easier to hack...

Then again, so many people already do.

I've seen copies of the beta version of Vista "around." Whether Microsoft is letting people use it for trial, or whether it is something someone "aquired" and is distributing it without the consent of Microsoft is another question all together. I've seen what the latest build that came out in December looks like. To tell you the truth it looks like the illegitimate child of OSX and XP.
