Yeah lets get everyone to buy sub-par mid-level hardware so that at the end of next year they'll be wishing they had spent more than $175 and bought a decent card that could handle all the new stuff.

Been through it, never will recommend a mid-level card again (and the 5770 is most certainly that).

How do you know I'm a 'he'? :p

I overclocked it from 2.13 to 2.66ghz with no problems, just had to get a new cooler. I tried 2.7, but it was unstable at stock voltage...I think I was able to bump the voltage up to get it stable at 2.7ghz, but then the max temp is at 60C, so I think I need better cooling before I can touch 3ghz. I bought a NorthQ Siberian Tiger (I know it's not a serious WC solution, but I got a pretty good deal on it), but it didn't fit (benchmarks point out that it cools better than a TRUE). Another reason for me to get a case, but that could probably get me to 3ghz, right?

If either card OC's well, I'm interested in either. I have a Zalman VF900 on my 9600GT right now, so I could use that and hopefully get some pretty good temps right?

It's not sub-par, it's as good as a 4890. The 5770 will handle all the new stuff better than the 4890, as the 4890 won't be able to run DX11. And spending more doesn't mean it's a better card. You spend more on the 4890 to no real benefit. It's spending more for no good reason.

Besides, 4890 is just a midrange card as well now. It's not high end either, so you point is 100% moot.

The better question is, why do keep trying to push the 4890 when the 5770 is clearly the better buy 90% of the time?

so a 4890 is high end because it again pumps out 3-5 fps more?? and takes 2 times the power to do it thats like saying

the 9800gtx is low end and the gts 250 is mid range when there the same card

the 5770 is basicall a DX11 replacment to the 4870 and it overclocks like crazy

and in those reviews i hardly call 1920x1080 with 8xAA and pumping out 50-60fps bad $169 gets him 60fps at hd with 8xaa and if u cut the AA lvl down fps keeps going up

hell a GTX 285 at 1680x1050 at max settings is only 2 fps faster then a 5770 but since your onlygoing to recommend high end cards why not tell him to spend $150 more and get that instead?

my point is a single 5770 can play every single game out there at high / very high with AA and get perfectly playable fps
not to mention it fits what the OP needs a 4890 5850 gtx 250 260 will not fit inside his case the 5770 gives the OP a great gaming experience and at a good price with newer features and newer games run fine exampl Dirt2 maxxed out 1920x1080 8xAA no issues and its new most games now are console ports the days of $400 gpus being needed to game are over except for titles like crysis that push the boundries.

example:

borderlands 2.4ghz P4 1gig ram and an 8800 series

and if u have dx11 and run the benchmarks in the sdk in many cases tessellation can give a performance increase so in the future its easily possible the 5770 will give him better performance and with higher settings then a 4890 etc

Because the benchmarks show that the 4890 is a better performer most of the time and it only costs like 10-15 more than the 5770. Of course I'd tell someone to get that one instead. As was stated early on pg 1, the 5770 is a 1GB 4870 with DX11.

and takes 2 times the power to do it

I keep forgetting that everyone wants to 'go green' these days.

It costs closer to $30 more on average. Definitely not worth the price difference, especially since both are still midrange.

And your 4870 analogy might be correct at stock speeds, but the 5770 OC's a hell of a lot better than a 4870, giving it much more value than a 4870, and easily approaching 4890 levels of performance.

in demanding games a 4890 stock vs a 5770 stock is 4fps faster in crysis warhead yea yea weak comparision but it is the most demanding game still

4890 gets 30 the 5770 gets 26 oced 5770 gets 31fps and consider voltage tweaks and the extra room avaible the 5770 can go even further and again 5k series drivers have improved

example 5850 crossfire in warhead i went from 34fps average at 1680x1050 very high blah blah to 46fps just going from the 9.11 to 9.12 hotfix drivers

I'll be waiting for the numbers.

OC club's review. 5770 Vapor-X trades blows with the 4890 Vapor-X.

(It's the only in- depth 5770 OCing review I've sen so far)

and the only logic behind seeing the 4890 as high end is its # scheme 890 compared to the 5770s 770 in terms of this gen yea 5770 may be mid range but in terms of last gen its equal to high end and last gens cards are still more then enough for todays games and even future games

Why the hell is everyone whoring out the 5770 like you're gonna get paid if he buys it?

Jesus christ.
Because it is actually an overall better card? ;)

You can pick up a used 4890 for $100 on Ebay.ca

That's all you really need to get 60 fps in Vertical Synch mode anyways.

God, not another 5770 discussion.

This isn't about used cards so far. If the OP wants to consider used, there's likely still better choices than a 4890. And $100 isn't the norm for a used 4890, btw, so your point is moot.

I don't mind buying used at all. As long as it works and as long as it still has a warranty, it's fine with me.

I realized that if I were to get a 5770, I'd have to wait a bit longer. I have the OSX project set up on my system, and currently the Radeon 5 series are not supported in any form. I need full hardware acceleration for that, so if I were to upgrade soon, it'd have to be a 4 series card, which would unfortunately be probably too big to get right this second. So from what I see, it looks like the new case is coming first. That would eliminate most size/heat problems, as it will be bigger and have more air flow. I have a pretty beefy power supply, so I know my computer can handle any GPU out there right now (except for some crossfire and SLI solutions, but my mobo doesn't have either, so no worries there). I don't mind extra power consumption either. I'm probably going to hold off on getting a GPU until I get this case situation handled. Either way, this discussion was quite helpful, and I really appreciate everyone chipping in. I understand my options much better now, and I guess we'll see how the prices are when I'm ready. Thanks a bunch!

For OSX86, I'd consider an nVidia card. They've generally been better supported and overall more stable.

Yes, but supposedly there was a big chip malfunction problem with a bunch of their laptop video cards, so they might be switching to ATI. Either way, as long as it fully works, I'll take it.
