So I pulled the trigger, I got fed up with the nvdlskdlaskdsaj.dll stopped responding and sometimes random artifacts in games on my 8800GTX. And trust me, I tried everything, my last step was to watercool the 8800GTX with temperatures NEVER above 45C.

Removed drivers -> boot to safe mode -> use driver cleaner -> install 4870 -> unmark Nvidia services at startup to ignore missing dll's -> working flawlessly :)

Peak power consumption during tests:

8800GTX 288W
HD4870 265W

So here are the results:

It's close to 50% increase. Your results may vary.

I'l follow up with a UT3 bench, since I found some old 8800GTX's results lying around.

Yeah, the 8800GTX ain't a bad card, but the 4870 is a few generations ahead and is a bit faster.

I was actually more surprised by the lower peak power consumption.

Yeah, it's a step in the right direction but I think 265w is still gluttonous. I wonder how much power my 9800gt sucks down?

Only time I had "weird artifacting" with my 8800 GTX was when I was trying to OC it. If I left it stock it worked fine. But yeah, you will see a nice increase with an HD 4870. I got similar results when I went from an 8800 GTX to a GTX 260.

Well considering a ps3 uses about 380w I wouldn't consider 265w gluttonous but when you throw cpu ram hd disk drive HIGH POWER LEDS fans pumps etc. It gets outta control but if you wanna run Crysis 17 u gotta do it until they go back to 8 bit games.

A ps3 is a full system though. 265w just for a video card is too much IMO. I think it should be more like 100w

265W is FULL system from power outlet.

This translates with HX520's power efficiency to 230W actual load. FULL SYSTEM.

Code:
