About eight of them. Now my mobo won't recognize my Opty anymore. Oh isn't life wonderful? I was able to bend them back enough to fit back into the socket, but it still will not be recognized.:ohwell:

I have a friend in RI that offered me $25 plus a working 3500+ Venice (that maxes out at 2.6ghz) for my non-functioning Opty. I also have $200 from just selling my CS:S server, but that money was supposed to go towards new rotors for my car. My dad offered to buy me the rotors and have me pay him off. So I have a few options here:

1. Use the Venice, deal with half the cache and 400mhz slower, and use the $200 to buy the rotors, and have the $25 to do whatever with.

2. Sell the Venice, use whatever money I make from that on top of the $225 to buy a nice dual core or something of the like, deal with the warped rotors currently on my car.

3. Sell the Venice, use the money from that and the $25 to buy probably an Opty 144. Then still buy the rotors with the $200.

1998 Buick Regal GS. I'm looking to buy aftermarket cross-drilled and slotted rotors. It's a pretty quick car and I'm planning on souping it up.

why doesnt the motherboard detect it if the pins are bent back? have you tried it in another system? maybe the mobo got killed when you tried to put the cpu in? troubleshoot, then go to those 3 situations...

$50 for all 4 rotors($12.50 a piece)... what kind of car are you driving? A go cart?? I have a 1999 Olds, basically the same as his car and $200 for 4 rotors is about right for good quality new rotors.

The pins aren't perfeclty straight, they're straight enough to fit into the socket well. However I believe that they're not straight enough to fit all the way down into their designated holes and make good contact. I was planning on still troubleshooting, I'm not quite about to give up if I still have the chance to save this thing.

However what I think I'm going to do if I can't get it to work is this: I'll put the $200 towards the CPU, as well as say $100 or so from the Venice, and the $25 as well and then either buy that Opty 148 or even maybe a 165 dual core. Then I would have my dad buy the rotors and pay him off once I get a job, and I wouldn't have him buy the rotors until I have a job. That way I wouldn't get myself into a sticky mess possibly having to pay off the rotors without a job. What do you guys think of that?

Yeah but I have about 8-12 bent pins, and the pins a an AMD64 are a ton closer than an XP. Although I will still keep trying. My only problem is my friends and I are planning another LAN party this weekend and I'd like to be able to play at it. Whether that means fixing my old one or buying a new one and getting it shipped here in time.

Use the end of a mechanical pencil... usually the .5mm work great, but may be .7mm.

That's actually exactly what I did. .7mm first, then I used .5mm. But these pins make even the .5mm look gigantic. I could easily straighten them with say tweezers or needlenose pliars, but the problem is I would end up bending the pins around them as a result.

Well I'm probably going to order a new CPU tonight. Which do you guys think I should go with.

I could get an Opty 144/148. If I got another CABYE/CABNE I'd have myself another 2.9-3.1ghz cpu. However I may end up with a CAB2E which would be more around 2.5-2.8ghz.

Or an Opty 165 which usually overclocks between 2.4-2.7ghz, but it's a dual core. I have also seen as high as 2.835ghz, but that was at 1.66vcore.

id go for either a 148 or the duel core the duel core if u choose to get it i would oc to what was it 2.8 ish? and id give it the vcore it may be slower than the 148 you had but the duel cores would benifit you later......but if youd rather not go duel core get the 148. but since u may get a lower grade stepping id go with duel core.

Yeah from what I'm reading on Newegg many people (and these are on recently written reviews) are getting 2.5+ghz no problem, and the only reason they're not going higher is because they have shitty ram/mobo/cooling, or they don't want to do major tweaking or up the vcore much. So I believe I'm going to order a dual core. I'm also fairly confident that even at say 2.4ghz the dual core will outrun my single 3ghz. Especially since many games now are programmed to run with multiple threads and use dual cores.

use a .33mm guitar pick, or even construction paper soaked in super glue...

super glue as in the liquid thin runny glue.. once it dries, it will be very stiff, and thin enough to fit between the pins...

"Especially since many games now are programmed to run with multiple threads and use dual cores."

i would have to disagree with that one.. they arnt and they aint likely to be for some time.. your single core cpu at 3 gig will still outperform any slower dual core cpu even the FX60 from a gaimg perspective.. assuming u dont want to play several games at once that is.. ??

i aint saying dual/multi core isnt the future just that the future hasnt arrived yet and there is no guarantee when it will.. software usually lags a long way behind hardware it aint just a question of a few tweaks more a completey different way of doing things.. they wont be overly eager to change the way they do things.. why should they..???

Well I guess that doesn't matter now because I tested my CPU at my friends house and it still runs like a champ. ...Thats the good news.

The bad news is now I have to figure out what the real problem is.

Edit: Alright well it's recognizing the CPU again, but now I'm stuck back where I started: it's stuck on 2 LEDs. But I guess at least that's better than not being stuck on four. So at least I can go out and buy those brakes.
