When you typed SELECT PARTITION 1 and pressed Enter did it say it had selected that partition?

OK, let us redo the steps.

Remember to press Enter after each entry and wait for the command to complete before going to the next:

1) DISKPART

2) LIST DISK

3) SELECT DISK 0

4) CLEAN

5) CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

6) SELECT PARTITION 1

7) ACTIVE

Let me know what happens.

After attempting to install win7 so many times yesterday w/ failure the idea came to me that i would try to install xp and go from there. The wini7 give details on how to upgrade from xp to win7.
the attempt was a failure. I recieved messages similiar to that of trying to install win7 and that was that the hard disk could not be partitioned.
so failure to install on 2 seperate systems would lead me to believe the hard disk if faulty.
thoughts, comments? i hope that this may narrow things down and be an easier fix and stop me from having to make a 25min. drive to switch out the hard drive.

I also switched out the sata cable from the hard drive to the mobo. I am hoping that the fix to this will be very easy or just a simple switch at the computer store.

It is possible the hard drive is defective.

Just some friendly advice, the moderators have already warned you about multiple posts, rather than editing your previous post. I would hate to to see you get an infraction or a temporary ban.

Changing the SATA cable is a good idea, and you might also try using different ports on the motherboard.

Anyway, do you want to continue where we left off last night, or just try a new hard drive?

what is your thinking in regards to the hard drive? does it need formatting, etc etc. I am willing to try anything but i do not wish to be wasting your time.

I believe it is worth a try.

And I am not concerned about my time, but I wonder if it might be a waste of your time?

We may go through the whole procedure only to find out it was the hard drive all along.

By the way, the drive is brand new, is it not?

If it is bad, I would not buy a new one, but try to return it to where you got it, or at least RMA it to Western Digital.

yup. i went thru the system command from last night that we did. last nite it recognized a partition 0 but when i went thru today it did not recognize it. the hard drive was completely disconnected last nite.
when the comp. was restarted this p.m there were no issues, it asked for the dvd, etc. clicked "any key" and it went straight to installing windows. i have tried to install win7 once today. it recognizes the "0 allocated disk"

did i mention that last night after we were done i tried to install win xp and was met w/ the same problem that the disk could not be partitioned.
so 2 windows programs (win 7 and xp) could not partition the hard drive
