That athlon should be a tiny bit faster than the E4500 but they are pretty much on the same level.

I wouldnt recommend buying that. The gpu is going to be slower and the cpu and motherboard is at most a side grade and/or it is slower than what you have now

Seeing as the OP already has the AM2 M52L-S3P running the AM3 X2 250, the side-grade to a C2D, as already pointed out by the masses above, is pretty much a fruitless endevour.

But, what he can do is swap out that X2 250 to something "a bit better" and avoid having to change motherboards/platform AND save money in the process; hopefully allowing for a better card to be purchased than the 8600GTS he had intended to buy.

The good news is that the Gigabyte may be old, but it'll support pretty much any AMD CPU with a TDP of up to 95w (125w isn't officially supported), with the exception of the lower-end X6 range.

Yes, the HT will be limited to 2000 (as apposed to 4000 on newer boards), but, getting a used X3/X4 AMD CPU would certainly breathe extra life into this rig and avoid the side-grade for a similar cost as originally planned while maintaining an healthy lead over the proposed E4500.

A full list of supported CPU's can be found @HERE. Make sure to have the F5 BIOS installed before progressing with a CPU upgrade.
