Modern Warfare 2 online lag

I have a massive problem playing modern warfare 2 online if my brother is playing it on the xbox360. It's usually fine if I'm playing by my own but if he starts playing it lags for both of us. I assume there's a conflict of IP's or something.

uh, do you mean you are playing it another xbox or you are playing it on a PC? check your router QoS settings. any of the clients on wireless?

No the xbox is on another screen. It's just internet lag that's the problem.

i would definately check your router QoS settings because the router may be giving precedence to your brothers xbox and not sharing bandwidth equally.

that wont matter if your router isnt set up for it. again, are they wireless or what?

Yeah but its wierd. I think it's either our provider or the router or something is breaking. I've tried setting factory defaults etc doesn't make a difference.

Oddly enough internet speed has been quartered tonight. Virgin will be getting an angry call tomorrow.

but u must remeber with no dedicated server you have to depend on who your connecting to ,to have a good upload or there will be lag,that why the MW2 team uses easyrhino and his FIOS to host the games

Well even when I connect to a decent host it still lags with me if we are both playing.

Both the 360 and pc versions use the same ports.

what speed broadband do you have? whats the upload speed and what provider, also how far are you from the exchange?
You sound like you dont have enough bandwidth for the both of you.
Generally in the UK you have 512kb upload speed as a max on a base broadband package, some are even as low as 256, with the highest home boradband giving you 1024kb... and with you being in scotland (and if you live in a remote area) it could be realistically much less... on broadband your ping and connection speed to a gameserver will rely heavily on upload speed amd the routers ability to cope with multiple connections.

If its working fine on your own and only when your bro plays it F's out then im inclined to say get faster braodband with a higher upload speed or go cable (virgin fibreoptics)

How much bandwidth does XBL use?

The reason that I ask is this:

If your bandwidth is 1.00 Mbps. Your ping is 50ms.
If you are downloading a file at 200 KB/s you still have 800Kb/s available right? yes, but for some reason latency is heavily affected, and your ping will go up to 200-300 or so.

Just something to think about.

That is very strange. I can use about 80% of my connection speed before I see any significant increase in latency--and I use a wireless USB card. It is very odd that it begins to lag just because you're both playing at the same time. Are there any other transfers going on through the network? I always lock my uTorrent up/down speeds pretty low right before I go into gaming.

MW2 is no mmorpg game. Its a bandwidth hog.. you should have a dedicated line / higher inernet speed if your going to play or unplug your brother's lan cable from the router hehe

I've got 10Mbps cable from virgin and sometimes they decide to quarter it, in their own words "for the benefits of others" So that explains the lack of bandwidth

Yeah I've configured the router.

Valid question. there is no way in hell you have a 10MB/s connection (80Mbit) - so either you made a typo, or you know a lot less about this stuff than you think you do.
Also, thats your download speed - whats your upload? (advertised and real)

HOW have you configured the router - do you realise that port forwards only allow one machine access to the port? this could be the problem.

Also, the game could be using you (or the 360) to host, and it just cant handle it. sucks to not have dedicated servers, doesnt it?

upload speed at 0.5Mb/s is the problem. thats likely too slow.

1Mb = 125KB/s
halve that, and you're getting ~50KB/s ( rounding it down for simplicities sake)

If either one of those systems (PC or console) is trying to host the game, then its going to flood that and its going to lag like a bitch.
