If you want to get better just play the single player on a harder difficulty level. After you beat it you can play through some fun scenarios that will help with your finer points.

My suggestion is play the game how you want to. ie if you like sniping go that route, if you like to run and gun get the biggest gun with grenade launcher. Theres tons of ways to play just choose your favorite way to play.
