wow - thanks for the amazing feedback. by the looks of it samsung did win so i am going to go with this one.
the only bad thing is that it costs a bit, i was looking around the £150 (inc VAT) mark

i have no idea what my current monitor is. its made by Yusmart i think. i will find out and get back to you but right now im off to meet the misses!
