I'm planning replace my 5 year old 1080p 21" LCD monitor. But I don't know what type&resolution should I choose. Do you think the future of lcd is 4K? Or should I just buy a bigger IPS screen with a standard 1080p? Does the internet and gaming technology ready for the 4K technology? What do you think?

27" monitors are nice, but may simply be too big, physically, as in too tall or too wide, for many. If you have a hutch on your desk, for example, you may have some height restrictions so you may be limited to a 24 inch monitor and one with a stand that include height adjustment.

Are you planning on keeping this monitor for at least 5 years too? Nobody really knows where the graphics world will be in 5 years. So IMO, you need to plan for the future and buy the latest and greatest your budget allows.

It depends how far you sit from your monitor but for me it's about 2 ft. I have enjoyed a 27 inch monitor even when I was gaming at 1080p but I did notice a big difference in the sharpness when I went to a 27 inch 1440p. Now I've got a 1440p 144 Hz Dell that I'm going to hook up at the end of the week paired with an RTX 2070 Super and see if the 144 Hz monitors make gaming much smoother at the higher FPS like I've been hearing for years.

I buying a monitor, the best user experience with today's tech is 144/165Hz / IPS panel from AUOptronics w/ G-Sync / ULMB. This tech doesn't exist at 4k.

However, If I understand you correctly, you are using an 8 year old laptop w/ an Amd 7650m to drive the monitor. A 1080p monitor is going to be a tough assignment for many games with that GPU..

The AMD 7650 M is the functional equivelent of a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q which is the 100th ranked GPU here:

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

COD Modern Warfare = 22 fps #@ 1080p Ultra
Metro 2033 - 17.9 fps at 1600 x 900 High
Skyrim = 21 fps @ 1366 x 768

Is there a new box or new lappie on the horizon ? If not, Id stay at 1080p

what are you buying it for ?
gaming - I advise agaist it.4k is a mirage.1440p high refresh at,that's where current gaming is.
not for gaming - yes

I'm using a 1440p 24" 165hz one and would never trade for anything.sharp as hell, easy to drive with a decent gpu and like you said the size is nice and compact.

Well, "compact" in this case may be a relative term. My previous pair of monitors were 22" and compared to them, this pair of 24" are much bigger and compared to my previous 19" monitors, these 24s are HUGE!

I would recommend a 27" 1440p monitor, using 4k monitors for gaming would require at least a 2080 GPU

The future is high refresh rate. Almost all the monitor makers are pushing it. And looking recent trend, Nvidia's periodically pushing the narrative that high refresh rate is best. You should expect a lot of sheeple buying high refresh rate monitor just because Nvidia said so.

24 inch 1080p 144hz is the entry point.

With today's mid range graphics cards 27 inch 1440p 144hz is the recommended.

Ofc there's ultrawide 21:9 1080p and 1440p monitors though they're often 75-100hz.

27" is a bit big for competitive online games, e.g dota2, league of legends, fornite, csgo, overwatch,
i went back to 22inch for dota2 and league and i find myself playing better on the 22" than on the 27"
as for online shooters i think 24" is the size you want.

In a sense, monitors are like keyboards and mice. This keyboard and mouse may feel great in my hands but may feel awkward or even painful in yours. I can comment on build quality, extra features, and reliability, but only you can decide for yourself, which are better for you and your particular scenario.

The same applies to monitors. Again, we can comment on build quality and reliability, and to some extent, screen technologies, viewing angles and other "objective" criteria. But there are many "subjective" aspects too - including screen size, stand adjustment features, inputs, resolutions, speakers or no speakers, USB or no USB - aspects that, because they are based on personal preferences, can only be answered by the users themselves.

For example, my desk sits at a fixed height. My chair height is adjusted so my feet sit flat on the floor and my arms extend at a comfortable angle to my keyboard and mouse tray. My desk also has a hutch. And, I hate looking up to a monitor screen. I want center screen to be slightly down-angle from my head, like this. Therefore, my monitors absolutely must have height adjustment.

Also, I have a nice THX surround sound speaker system so I don't need nor do I want to pay for integrated speakers I will never use.

Last, I always run in a dual monitor setup so I want my monitors to have thin bezels.

Point being, height adjustment, speakers, and bezel thickness are essential qualities for me that I always take into consideration that have absolutely nothing to do with image quality - yet these qualities may be of no interest to others.

So IMO, you mclaren85, need to decide for yourself what size monitor you want, what added features (like stand height adjustment) you want, the inputs you need and might need in the future, set a budget, then go from there.

I always prefer BIG. This mon is a 21.5" 4-3, I prefer 4-3 screen online. On one side is a 27" ws, other side 24" ws. (for different computers + kvm sw) I sit back from monitor(s), I have computer glasses prescription for ± 3.5' viewing away. (I have a 'surf board' for my marble mouse for comfort laying back, & cruisin'!).

As others have mentioned, I believe 1440p 144Hz to be the sweet spot. The increased resolution over 1080p is nice for gaming and media consumption alike, and the high refresh rate keeps everything smooth.

Just my choice. 27" 1440p IPS 144Hz with Freesync. I'm still very happy with it and have no plans to replace it.

Well I bought the best my budget allows and it is a 27" full hd IPS monitor. but, to be honest although it is an IPS panel, the sharpness is not as good as 21" lcd panel. don't know why?

Because 1080p on 27" is bad. 1080p looks good up to 24", on 27" it is too stretched. With 27" go for 1440p or higher resolutions. Bigger doesn't equal better.

You should have warned me before
Well, doesn't automatically mean inferior either. There are many variables that play into image quality that have nothing to do with the size of the display.
