Monitor ( need advice )

Hi Lads.

Before i do something stupid i need some quickly advice.

A few minutes ago i was at Saturn buying a few Games and unfortunately i saw a Monitor and i wanted to buy it i was almost buying it without think twice, too much temptation but i decided to go away before it was too late, so i come here to ask to you Guys.

This is the monitor:

ASUS ROG Swift Curved PG348Q Gaming Monitor - 34" 21:9 Ultra-wide QHD (3440x1440), 5ms, IPS overclockable 100Hz , G-SYNC™


My Current Monitor:

Asus ROG Swift PG278Q Gaming Monitor - 27'' 2K WQHD (2560 x 1440), 1ms, up to 144Hz, G-SYNC™

Note: The Monitor cost 1200€+ but money it is not an issue

All advice are welcome

IMO 34" is too large if you use it when sitting close to it on a desk.....
You will be looking from left to right with your head.

If you use it from a distance it could be good.

But is it worth the upgrade?

Well it's good for extra desktop real-estate and e-peen....
I wouldn't worry much about that 5ms.

Yup 100Hz, at what fps are you running with your current monitor when gaming?
Since it's more pixels your 1080 will have to work harder so 100Hz may be enough depending on your ingame settings.

Stick with current monitor and just wait lower price high refresh 4k.

1080 to 3440x1440 i prolly recommend it if you have the money

Things to notice:

All you gain is extra width, no height, so for gaming I would say you'll be regretting this. And for everything else, its even worse. Web pages love height, not width. Same as most productivity work.

You lose alot:

- Sweet spot resolution for gaming (1440p) perf/IQ wise - even if you have a 1080ti.
- High refresh on a fast panel
- Overclockable IPS will be ghosting alot and your current TN does not
- Near-perfect PPI for normal view distance, no text scaling required
- 27 inch fills your vision, 34 inch UW will introduce neck cramps

Bottom line: I wouldn't even swap if they GAVE me money

4K or near 4K is overrated, but does increase the system requirements dramatically. Cost and gain... highly questionable. The only tangible win here is IPS over TN. But if that is what you're after, there are so many better choices to make.

PS. 1:4 or 1:2 downscaling does not work as well as you'd think either, it always comes out more blurry than native res.

My advice is to wait 6 months. The next generation of ultrawides were recently anounced and will be out in Q4. If money is not an issue then 200htz with hdr will be worththe wait, and if not prices on current models will fall.

another thing you might consider is the light bleed being that wide, I had to return mine twice at microcenter or just my bad luck.

IMO if you really want to go UW there is only one way to go

The curve fixes VA's inherent issues, and VA kills IPS for anything but professional color accuracy. Its poor man's OLED in terms of contrast and black values.

The curve does fix the neck cramp issue, for the most part. In return, it fucks up geometry

But as with all monitor purchases, always try it at home before you decide, YMMV.

i have the same panel the OP wants and it is curved, i do light photo and vid editing so im cool with IPS.

Yeah. There is always something bigger and better on the horizon, but in this case we are at the tail end of one generation. Best to wait.

one other thing some games doesn't natively support 3440X1440 and have to edit txt files, even doing that it makes the game look kinna wanky

Absolutely, IPS is fine, but for entertainment, its an extremely boring panel to have. Its accuracy combined with low static contrast usually invites you to fiddle with higher brightness values or overdone contrasts which in turn creates unnatural images where color accuracy is doomed altogether.

This is where VA shines, the high static contrast (3000:1 or even 5000:1 versus the 1000:1 of all IPS) really makes the images pop out, if you calibrate it right, while not oversaturating any colors or losing any grey tones. It can 'feel' so realistic that some images appear to have actual depth. Also, good VA's dont have ANY backlight bleed whatsoever. Any time you turn on a good quality VA monitor, you'll be like 'shit, this looks nice'. I still have that 'effect' any time I am away from the PC for a few days and turn it on again.

Some more illustration of what VA does for me; I used to play Skyrim with SweetFX, on the VA panel I could toss it out and not ever look back. The base image is so contrast rich and vibrant, you won't want it anymore.
