Hey guys.

I just upgraded to 2 980 TI cards and i own a Dell U3014 monitor with a resolution of 2560x1600.

will be worth to upgrade? cz i need to buy a new monitor for my brother cause he just finished building his rig so am asking if will worth to give him my dell and get something better for me or is not worth it?

price is not an issue for me.

i will be gaming on this.

thanks

Yeah.,... what are you asking? I mean if not 4K, get a 2560x1440 IPS 120Hz+ IPS panel.. But those are really your only two options.

I picked up an Acer XR341CK 3440x1440 which is the freesync model of the Predator series and I freely admit it is one of the best upgrades I've bought.

They are a little pricey, but it really makes the entire experience of using my rig thoroughly enjoyable, not just gaming. For general use there is just so much real estate to be used.

Had a few issues with some games not running natively in ultra wide, and other games not using Crossfire, which sometimes make a single 290x choke up with eye candy cranked, but I HIGHLY recommend it.

What ever resolution monitor you get for gaming, get one with G-sync for your nvidia cards.

if you like eyecandy sliders to the right in 2016 AAA titels, I guess a 3440x1440 g-sync would be the best recommendation for 980 ti in sli.
Take the Division with a single 980ti @2560x1440 nvidia experience recommends medium-high settings as default.

It doesn't matter if it is Freesync or Gsync, it is personal preference as both work well.

since OP stated he has Nvidia cards, only g-sync will work for those.

Depends on the cards. Freesync works with AMD, Gsync works with Nvidia, but not vice-versa.

No, Nvidia Maxwell cards on support adaptive sync which is basically Freesync.

They just sound like they are the same thing.
nvidia, adaptive sync = turn on vsync when exceeding set monitor refresh rate.
amd, adaptive sync = freesync.

No, Nvidia Maxwell cards on support adaptive sync which is basically Freesync.

I think you are confusing adaptive vsync with adaptive sync.

Freesync is just AMD's branding for the openly and freely adaptive sync technology that is built into Displayport 1.2a and higher. Adaptive sync dynamically adjust the monitor's refresh rate to match the framerate of the GPU, so each frame the GPU renders is displayed in full on the screen, and every single frame is displayed with none being skipped. G-sync does the same thing.

Adaptive vsync is what nVidia has supported since Maxwell. They do not enable support for the free adaptive sync/Freesync. All adaptive vsync does is turn on vsync when the framerate is over the refresh rate of the monitor to prevent tearing, but turns it off when it is below the framerate to help prevent stuttering and the framerate dropping down to the next vsync point(which is usually 30Hz on a 60Hz panel). It does not adjust the refresh rate of the monitor.

i have a pair of 980 ti cards but still chose an IPS asus rog swift 1440 over a 4k option..

you make a simple choice.. a higher resolution (4K) with half the frame rates or 1440 with double the frame rates and higher refresh rates.. i chose the latter option..

assuming 4K does provide extra eye candy i dont think the performance hit is worth it..

purely personal opinion.. other opinions will differ.. :)

You are right, some Kepler cards supported Adaptive VSync as well. What I meant as that they started supporting adaptive vsync on their entire line-up since maxwell, they only supported it on some Kepler cards.

Agreed.

If you do pursue a 1440p or a non 4k path/monitor, you have slim options for things greater than 28" with all the bells and whistles.
For instance I was keen to get a 32-35" 1440p Gsync 144hz monitor and the only one I know of that is close, would be the Predator Z35, though that is only 1080p /1080 pixels high. Also the bezel width is chunkier than the Z34, which I don't know why they did that (especially given the cost).

So for now it may be best to wait if you're in the market for something performance manageable and over 30" that has all the features people want these days.

I bought a 144hz gaming monitor from Acer as well. I was skepitcal at first but I'm happy with my purchase. The monitor looks gorgeous and I payed about 100$ less than the Benq's and Asus's for it. Hopefully I see some longevity out of it.

In regards to which monitor to chose I think it's whatever you prefer. If you're all about detail and the way games look then get the highest resolution you can get. Regardless of refreshrate. If you're a competitive gamer that likes to have the least amount of input lag possible while caring less about detail, then the higher refresh rate monitor is for you.

It doesn't matter if it is Freesync or Gsync, it is personal preference as both work well.

He has or plans to get nvidia cards, why the hell would he get a freesync monitor. Thats AMDs equivalent tech. Granted it just uses VESA adaptive sync through the DP port, but amd has it all enabled in their drivers so you need one of their cards for that. Need Nvidia cards for G-sync.

EDIT: read @newtekie1 post. Hes on point as always.

got to say im loving G sync + my Acer Predator x34, biggest issue is that my work monitor is only 60Hz and it feels like its stuttery as even when holding a solid 60fps lol, once you go 100Hz +G Sync theres NO going Back

ACER B286HK 28" 4K screen here.
It only does 60HZ, but it was cheap. (under $400)
I'm pushing it with a pair of EVGA GTX-980Ti cards and it's pretty smooth. (as smooth as 60HZ can be anyways)
I'll probably get a better screen when they release 4K @120-140HZ. This one is good for now.

That looks like a great monitor. You shouldn't be in any rush to replace it. As stated above you should only replace it if... 1) You really want 4k, or 2) You want a gaming focused monitor (G-Sync +144Hz refresh rate).

Two 980s in SLI should do 4k pretty decent but not every game will have a SLI profile and some games will still be rough for 4k. Also I'm not sure I would go 4k until GPUs support DisplayPort 1.3 and you can get a 4k IPS monitor with 144Mhz refresh rate and preferably one with G-Sync (if you stick with Nvidia) or FreeSync (if you switch to AMD). So I personally don't like idea of switching to "4k" right now. It is expensive, GPUs aren't advanced enough right now and neither are the monitors so you spend some big money and don't get benefits outside of picture quality.

If you go with a pure gaming monitor you will have to sacrifice on resolution (strict 1440p instead of 1600) and most likely screen real estate as well since most gaming focused IPS panels are 27". The Predator Z35 is nice but only 1080p so that would be a huge step down in resolution. Owning a G-Sync monitor I think it is solid tech and definitely enjoy it but you will have to step down resolution and/or real estate so you will be making a concession where as everything was an upgrade for me.

I say stick with what you got.
