Hello all. I believe I posted about this issue a while back but the problem subsides for a while. Well, now it's back.

My younger brother has a custom built PC that I put together for him. Over the past year or two he has a very strange issue with the monitor. While using his computer the monitor will just drop connection. The light turns from blue to amber and that's it. Nothing he does will bring it back. Unplugging from the PC, unplugging the power, pressing keys, waiting, nothings works to fix it. The only thing he has found to fix it is to do a hard shutdown on the PC and bring it back up. Furthermore, he tells me when he has to do that, holding down the button doesn't work. He has to actually flip the switch on the PSU itself to get it to shut off. He has had some issues with his power button for a while so that could be the problem there, I'm not 100% sure.

The real kicker to this issue is how random it is. He just sent me a video of him starting his PC. He sees the Windows logo when it boots and then when it goes black right before it takes you to the initial login screen, it drops connection. He said this happened 3 or 4 times with him restarting before he finally got in. After that he was on it for about 5 minutes, opened up Chrome, and it did it again.

When I had his PC I tested RAM, video card, and CPU and found no issues. For the CPU and GPU I just did some stress testing for a couple of hours and had no problems. In fact, when I had the PC I couldn't replicate the issue one time which made it even harder for me.

He can't try a different monitor or cord for the monitor because he doesn't have an extra, sadly. With all of that being said, can anyone think of what the problem might be?

UPDATE:

He hooked up the TV and instantly had the issue. He rebooted his PC and it came back up and he was able to use it for about 5 minutes before it did the same thing as his regular monitor.

At this point would that point to video card, motherboard or PSU? We can at least eliminate the monitor and cables to it.

It's not a monitor issue. And if the power button works for turning the computer on it's not the button either. Intermittent issues are the worst. From what you've done so far I would say PSU/MB.

That was my assumption. I assumed if it were either one then the tiniest of glitch could be causing this issue. Enough to stop displaying anything but not enough to cause a shutdown. I wonder if a mobo speaker would help in this case?

Also, would you rule out the GPU at this point?

He need to try another monitor, or try that monitor on another computer just to rule it out. If another monitor is not available to try, note that most TVs these days support computer inputs.

No, you cannot rule out the GPU.

I wonder if a mobo speaker would help in this case?
Maybe. But if the problem is just the monitor losing a signal, a system speaker may not help as there may not be any beeps. Note that one I linked to is for 20 speakers. They are so inexpensive (but valuable) we put one in every one of our builds if the motherboard does not have an integrated system speaker.

Before spending any money (besides for a speaker) I sure would try another PSU first. Since everything inside the computer depends on good, clean, stable power, you must ensure you are providing it before replacing other components.

The one time a very similar thing happened to me, it turned out to be a PSU gone bad. In my case, the monitor would go black either looking at the desktop or playing a game... seemingly totally random. In my case though it would usually come back to life.

I took the entire PC apart swapped just about everything, then swapped the PSU with another system, where it took down a motherboard with it. Hyper R series PSU.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. He has a TV he is going to test with it. Depending on what happens there, we will proceed down the needed path. I will keep everyone updated as I find out more!

I'm sure everyone will have different opinions... but based on my experience, if you have a spare PSU, swap that out first.

Might be the graphics card, i have seen that before on few systems with GTX 560Ti cards. IIRC, there was massive thread about this issue on GeForce forums.

Yes.

So start with swapping in a known good PSU since everything else depends on good power.

1. Check the fan on the PSU. Is it spinning? Is the PSU made by a known company or some generic crap?
2. Maybe the power or reset buttons are broken, unplug all frontpanel cables (power/reset/HDD led) from the motherboard and use a screwdriver to power up the system (just shorten the PWR pin).
3. Try to re-seat the CPU and other devices (RAM, GPU).
4. Try to plug a different PSU (a working one).
5. If you tried everything above and still no luck, I'd say its the motherboard.

So this PC runs without a PSU? :p:p:p

Attempt to force the screen to go black: bump the case, play with the cords behind, move them around and jiggle them. Inside the case, prod the power cable and very lightly wiggle the video card and make sure its not droopy (older motherboards dont have a strong sockets).

I had a system with symptoms like this in the past. Turned out to be a failing PSU.
You'll need to try to swap out some components to find the suspect. Do you have another power supply or GPU to test with?

Sorry for the lack of response guys, he just got back to me with a model for his PSU.

He has a SilverStone 600watt (sst-st60f-es) from looking this is a PSU by silverstone offering plain 80 plus. Is this at least decent or should this thing still be chugging along without issues?

judging by the list (in the sig) thats 1 up from the bottom of the list. But that doesnt mean its not adequate for that build, age will also take its toll on PSUs.

It was already suggested to try another PSU, try on with the same wattage or bigger
