As it's gonna be used for gaming the most important feature you'll need to look out for is the response time (measured in milliseconds (ms)). The lower the response time the better, around 2ms is ideal for gaming. Contrast ratio is how dark the monitor can display black. 3000:1 or more will be fine.

Good brands of monitor are:

Samsung
LG
Acer
Viewsonic

What's your budget and where do you plan on getting one?

You could probably get a nice 22" for that if you shop around.

I agree with trickson. My LG was the best monitor I could get for the price at the time and it's a great monitor.

The amount of brightness, measured in lumens, that is given off by a pixel or area on a screen. For example, dark red and bright red would have the same chrominance, but a different luminance. Bright red and bright green could have the same luminance, but would always have a different chrominance .

LG makes great monitors, as does samsung. I love my 22" Samsung... 2ms and 5000:1, but for price pick between those two.

With your system, I would recommend a 22". Your 3870 will do 1680x1050 easily, I know this from experience. I use the Acer AL2223W and love it. You can usually pick it up for around $170 at newegg.

Try looking at anything samsung / LG / Acer, and if you can find one on ebay, a dell of any description.

They sell them in Europe too, for similar prices.

Monitors are touchy, I wouldn't get one from Ebay. I would go to a store that has a return policy. I took a gamble with mine from a forum, I paid $100 below retail, and got lucky. No dead pixels or anything.

The Acer 21.5" V223HQ (1920x1080, 1000:1, 5ms, 300cd/m2) is €155/1,155kr here so he should be able to find it similar price there., also available is the 20" V203Hb (1650x900, 000:1, 5ms, 300cd/m2) which is €119/887kr here.

Also look at the Acer 20" B203W (1650x1050, 2500:1, 5ms, 300cd/m2) for €179/1,334kr and 22" B223WB (1650x1050, 5ms, 300cd/m2, Integrated Speakers) for €209/1,558kr if you can stretch the budget.

The number one thing you need to choose is what resolution you want to run at.

You say you are currently using a monitor @ 1280x1024, mainly for gaming.

If you move to a larger 20-22" LCD monitor, you most likely be at 1680x1050. You will also need to consider if your PC (video card) is powerful enough to ensure proper framerates in the games you play at whatever graphics quality settings you desire.

A smaller 19" LCD monitor at 1440x900 will be less of a burden on your current system, but should still be a decent upgrade over what you have now.

Since you should always run an LCD monitor at it's native resolution, you need to make sure your system can properly run the games you play at the set resolution. Otherwise you'll just end up needing to upgrade your video card.
