More powerful of these two cards?

Anyone know what would be more powerful for gaming of these two...

1) 7950GX2 (confirmed running in SLI mode, no OC)

2) 8800GTS 512 (it will be OC'ed to 750/xxxx/1050)

Someone posted a way to actually get SLI working in Arma. My gaming buddy has been sidelined for quite some time as his "non-SLI'ed" 7950GX2 could not handle Arma at his native res of 1680x1050.

I have a spare 8800GTS 512 I could send him but won't bother if the GX2 in SLI is better.

I knew of using nHancer before but someone has posted results at the BI forums confirming that the method in the above link really works.

Any thoughts on the more powerful card - or is this too freakin hypothetical? I'm kinda hoping the GX2 would be just as good but I have my doubts. My friend would have to put in a new PSU if I sent him my G92.

The 8800GTS 512mb would be the better card. Somewhate comparable in performance, the 8800GTS wins. The 8800GTS 512mb is the same card as the 9800GTX. The 8800 is also DX10 compatable while the 7950GX2 is limited to DX9. Driver support also favors the 8800GTS and can also support PhysX.

* I should of just said that the 8800 beats the 7950x2 in just about every category.

The 8800GTS would be more powerful, but not by much.

Though I don't know why he would need a new PSU, the 7950GX2 should consume more power then the 8800GTS.

s'gotta be the 8800, its much more recent, will give you the same if not more power as the GX2 but with 0 scaling issues.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

He owns a Dell XPS gaming system that's about 2(?) years old. A while back he got his hands on a 8800 GTS 320. He put it in his Dell and in over the course of two days, it apparently killed his PSU. New Dell PSU and putting his 7950GX2 back in his Dell box took care of the problem. I'm guessing his Dell PSU is borderline for ANY upgrade.

I just sent him an OCZ 700W StealthStream for his b-day. If I send him an 8800GTS 512, he'll have to replace his Dell PSU - which I was hoping he could avoid.

No, somethings wrong. It's the card, i'm pretty sure 8800gts 320 sucks almost the same as the 7950x2. But now we're talking about 512mb version

7950GX2 Power Usage Chart

8800GTS 320 Power Usage Chart

8800GTS 512 Power Usage Chart

It seems that the 320 uses more power than the GX2 at both idle and load but the 512 uses only more power than the GX2 at idle. And overall, the 512 uses less power than the 320.

Could the tolerance of the Dell PSU be so tight that the 8800GTS 320 would not work where the GX2 worked fine? And what's even weirder is that the PSU died after installing the 320.

take a look at the "Our testing methods" page of the GX2 and 8800GTS 512 power usage chats you posted, looks like different systems, and the power usage measured was across the entire system. (one is AMD one is intel)

not a fair test by any means imo. specially with figures being so close to eachother, they must be skewed.
