So I got my new power supply. 550W Corsair. I spent all night cleaning out my PC and getting everything back into it. I installed windows, grabbed all my data off of my HD, and then reinstaled windows on to the hard drive that I had been using after a clean reformat.

I proceeded to install my other HDD so I'd be running 2 Hard drives in non RAID mode. One for media and one for programs and such. Well I seem to be having random reboots. It did it while i was reformatting the smaller HD, then it did it again while I was trying to run windows update. It was in the middle of updating...boom shuts off. After it rebooted...it did it almost immidately. These arent total hangs, the thing just reboots.

I'm thinking motherboard. If it is...it would almost make sense to get a new system but that will be more expensive than getting a new mobo, even if it is 939. Sound like a mobo problem?

reboots while the hardrive is writing will corrupt the data.. a random reboot is a normal sign of hardware instability..

its not that easy to pin down which piece of hardware thow.. if things are overclocked slow them down till u find the culprit..

Completed 1 pass, no errors, I'll probably let it go 2 passes see if the memory is fine. Anyone have any good mobo error checkers?

i dont think there is such thing as a "mobo error checker".. now its at stock speeds the problem gets harder to diagnose.. u could pretend its overclocked and up the voltages a smidge to see if that cures the problem..

If you're going to run MEMTEST, make sure you run TEST#5 either 30 times or more. One or two passes is NOTHING. Did you make sure that everything is connected probably since you have changed your PSU? Reset your memory modules, or at least take one out and see if that works, and vice versa. :)

Is it "blue screening"? Or does it just black out and reboot without doing anything? What was the reason for changing psu? Did it do it at all with the old psu?

I agree with Dyno. Re-check all your connections and run memtest test #5 and let her fly. If its your memory it will eventualy poke its ugly head out.

Update. Memtest did 2 passes, no fail. Memtest #5 ran 30 times with no problems. After some messing around and installing things, I managed to get it seemingly stable. But i think the reboots while windows was updating is causing Machine Check Exception BSOD's. So i'm repair installing windows.

Update on that. It crashes during the repair install of windows. Just resets. I'll test the processor next, I have a 3200+ laying around. If that fails...I think my only option is my Mobo.

I think it maybe the CPU.
Only time my system reboots is when I use Core temp and Orthos together and thats only on rare occasions otherwise my CPU will run through Orthos for hours on end.

heh, dosent matter now. I was spraying air intto the socket to get any stray dust out and some liquid shot from the can to the mobo. gave it somet ime to dry out and all, and tried my older 3200. turns on but wont post. I'm done. Look for a new mobo or just basically mini upgrade.

Wow! No good luck for you today. I think your better off starting from sctrach on this one. New mobo then take it from there. Every cpu (all 2 of them) that died on me started with the famous "blue screen of death" and progressed from there. Good luck!

Isn't technology great? :nutkick:
