I believe they only ever made up to the 2007 version, so still not that recent.

You're probably better off opening the file in LibreOffice instead.

MS Support support stopped with 2007 support page linked mentions other ways to open those documents.

If you have a Microsoft account, you can use the online Office to open most Office documents but you'll have a limited capability of editing them. You are required to upload the document to OneDrive to view it using the online Office tools. If the document is confidential in nature, this obviously not an option.

Barring that, use LibreOffice but don't expect miracles from it (there will be translation errors).

Although Microsoft has made it impossible to search for them on the native Windows 10 Store app, you can install the mobile Office apps and skip sign-in to use them in read-only mode:
