Hi there, so here it is, christmas time soon and for me its time to upgrade my mb and cpu (mainly for gaming and a bit of 3d) !

I would like to have some advice on my thought, for now I have this :

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/xVLzRB
(some parts are missing but its just about the mb and cpu anyway)

and would like to go for this :

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/BfCGD3

I dont know if its a great idea, especially for the mb since I feel like its a lot of money and I dont even know if it make a lot of difference for gaming (gonna do some 3d too thats why I want an i7).
For the cpu I heard about skylake and things like that so maybe there is a better setup for me than this one, I dont know.

So my question is : is it a good buy ? is there anything to change ? can I put less money on the mb ("gaming"motherboard really usefull ?)
I probably gonna buy it by january, is there anything that is going to came out that would be great to wait for ?

Thanks !

PS: I have around 600 to 800$ for the combo.

Youre a bit in the hot seat with both setups.

AMD setup is "strong" for 3D, but a new CPU and socket is comming out next year.

Intel setup looks fine, its strong, but again the socket is discontinued, since Skylake socket 1151 and chipset X170 came out in August.

The thing is, I really want to switch for Intel, if you are suggesting that I should wait I will, if there is a real difference in august 2016 I can do that but is it really worth it, that is the question, I dont really want my new setup being obselete in like 7 month hehe.

I would seriously consider a Skylake setup instead of the 2 you have found. All is depending on how much you use 3D modelling and if that something you be using more in the future.

The reason for that is my own experience, going from an AMD 8 core setup to the 6 core Intel setup that I have now. I have both machines right beside me.
I have loaded the exact same project into both machines, and pressed the button at the same time, when it was over, my Intel setup cut the time by almost ½. Im using Autocad btw.

I can only see 1-2 reasons for that, that makes sense to me.

1. Stronger CPU as in more effective

2. Quadchannel ram instead of dualchannel and the almost insane bandwith using DDR4 which you need a lot for a complex project.

In gaming theres next to no difference, or its so small you wont notice it at all, since whats holding you back is your GFX i 99% of the cases.

I would do more 3D in the future but more like a passtime activity, Im mainly gaming and right now I feel like my cpu is holding me down despite my gpu, I have a Geforce GTX 770 4gb and, for exemple, my friend have a lower gpu and a better cpu and he defenitly have more fps in any game we play.
Unless my 500$ gpu, that I bought 1year ago now thinking I should be fine for some times now, is already useless (and in this case I feel really bad haha) I only see my problem coming from the cpu.
So yea 3D is not my absolute priority but Im gonna do some for sure, but in this case is it still better for me to wait until august all the new stuff ?

I have a Geforce GTX 770 4gb and, for exemple, my friend have a lower gpu and a better cpu and he defenitly have more fps in any game we play.
People usually underestimate the importance of the CPU in gaming just because there are many games that are light on the CPU and heavy on the GPU. Even these kind of games, being dynamic enough, usually have sections where FPS varies wildly on lesser CPU, where a strong CPU has solid 60 fps. Not to mention that usually by lowering game settings one can make things easier on the GPU and not so much on the CPU (unless setting is visibility distance).
When DX12 goes mainstream, CPU will have less processing to do each frame compared to DX11, but the devs will restore the balance fast with increased game detail.
In my experience Intel's i5 is at a sweet spot for gaming with great single threaded performance and enough cores for newer games that will use them.

THANKS BiggieShady its exactly what Im thinking, it seems like more and more we have games that are more center around cpu power than gpu, and indeed my friend have a i5, the only reason I want to go for i7 is for 3D later on.
If you where in my shoes what would you do ? Wait for august like Ebo suggest or would you go ahead and buy it right now ?
The only reason for me to wait would be if the difference is really big and the fact that I will have enough money to upgrade my ram again and go for ddr4 (wich is not my current problem).

I'd go for skylake i7 + quality Z170 board (with good ram compatibility) + ddr4 right now if the budget allows and keep the rest of the components.
If budget is constrained I'd look for deals for haswell i7 and mid range z97 mobo with a discount ... and keep the rest.

Ok so I dont know a lot about these kind of things obviously but does this seem like something youd buy ?

http://www.ncix.com/detail/intel-core-i7-6700k-processor-8m-63-111156-1770.htm

And

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-z170-a-atx-lga1151-z170-a1-111462.htm
(I dont know what quality Z170 mean for you haha)

Another thing is, Im not interested in overclocking anything, atleast not my self, mainly because I dont know how to do it. Ho and for the ram Im not worried there is plenty of review here and there to make the choice easier I guess.

PS: I also found some bundles like this one :

http://www.ncix.com/detail/ncix-bundle-deal-msi-z170a-ea-116991-1233.htm

Might be intesresting ?

Is there anyone that could help me make a choice... Ive been searching on my side since my last post and Im totally lost, there's so many things and people always saying that "yea this mb is awesome, get it" but there is no real comparaison to another one, I dont know what should I get for gaming, what a "quality" z170 really is.

I think I really need some help haha the only thing that seems right is the cpu, the one I linked above seems to be the good one.

Where I live, Asrock is the underdog regarding prices. They have everything and normally they deliver, since they are no. 4 in the market today and very close to MSI on a yearly basis.

Otherwise try and OC your CPU, turn it up to 4.2-4.5Ghz then you wont have any problem in games:).

Why does everyone pick Skylake as if Haswell suddenly went to sh*t? Haswell has the same or better CPU power and when using a dedicated GPU, it honestly doesn't matter. DDR3 vs DDR4 isn't that big of a difference. You can find a good setup and maybe even a really good 2nd hand board or chip and save money. I'd like to see someone tell me that Skylake is better overall over Haswell, core per core, no iGPU.

A 4790k is just as good if you cared to not overclock with its higher clockspeeds. DDR3 memory is also pretty cheap by now.

Well I had Skylake in mind after all the things I read and the fact that the price difference doesn't seems huge for what it add in therm of "future proofing" I would say, for the ram I can have 16gb ddr4 for the same price as 16gb ddr3 (maybe 20$ difference).
On another hand if Im willing to pay 410$ for a 4790k I would rather go for some more and put 500$ in a 6700, thats is how I see things right now.
Another thing is, obviously without doing any research here, I can find some bundle for Haswell setup for around 650$ keeping my ddr3 while I can spent 100$ more (bundle I linked above) and get a Skylake setup and upgrade to ddr4 later if I want, in the end it feels like 100$ difference would be worth it...right ?
