Hey

I am having a problem with my Windows 8.1. My sound card supports only Windows 8 properly. I contacted Asus already and asked if they make a 8.1 driver for my Asus Xonar HDAV1.3 but they answered that the card won't get any more support, because of its age. I bought accidentally Windows 8.1 64 Bit OEM instead of 8.

So 8.1 is already installed if I reinstall the Windows. Does anybody know if I can get a special Windows 8 Image and activate that with my bought Windows? I do have an other Windows 8 64 Bit OEM running with a DVD. Can I use that and activate with a different key?

Seriously, Microsoft brings out a Windows and then they just make an other Windows of it and all drivers have to be updated. That is making me mad. Does anyone know a solution?

My sound card only supports windows 7 but works quite well in windows 8.1 even with DDSS. I just installed the windows 7 driver from the website and have had no issues yet.

oh man
sounds rough - we have issues with 8.1 too (IE11) and stay away from it as much as possible atm. You will probably need a new key, but you may be able to download the ISO from Microsoft and try it with your 8.1 key (could work but unlikely).

Thanks guys for the fast replies. Did you use any compatibility mode while installing or whenever? This could be the next step to do for me.

So, I'm not seeing where you've tested this thing. I see that the official support is only for 8, but don't see a problem listed as yet.

Don't think about 8.1 as a new OS. Think about this as windows 8 sp 1. Drivers that ran on XP ran on XP sp3, and there is functionally no reason that drivers working in windows 8 should not work in 8.1. Additionally, note that almost all of the drivers downloaded for windows 7 also list Vista compatibility. Try it, and then give us a heads-up when something actually doesn't work.

As far as I know, 8.1 cannot be down graded to 8. The idea of doing so is all sorts of backwards (I say this because 8.1 is 8+upgrades). MS "doesn't do anything backwards." so they don't offer moving back.

Wow, cool. I should try this one. You're great thanks.

i hope it works, i used Win8 drivers for my Essence STX card in Win8.1 Pro before their Beta driver for Win8.1 got released, same goes for my Asus ThunderFX usb sound card i am using now, i use Win8 driver and it works flawless.

only thing i can't figure out is how to connect my speakers to it

8.0 and 8.1 use the same drivers. just install 8.1 and go for it.

Yes, of course the driver does work but there is an issue that makes me mad sometimes. Every time I start the PC I need to restart him several times before the input to my second monitor comes and the sound. So when I come home and want to watch a movie or anything, I need to wait until this signal works. Sometimes the signal didn't come for one hour and that's annoying. My other PC with Windows 8 has not this problem and he has also the same sound card and the same Monitor...

Today I saw how other Asus cards have full Windows 8.1 support at the drivers and that made me jealous. :ohwell::cry:

I understand now. Sorry, my assumption was that you hadn't tried because of the listed compatibilities.

That uni driver needs the Windows Test Mode to get worked and I don't really know how now. Well I went back to status quo and tried to run the offical driver with compatibility mode and as admin but nothing has changed.

Still the big question is how can I get to Windows 8? Maybe I should try to contact somebody from Microsoft before I try to reinstall for nothing.

Windows 8.1 IS an other operating system than 8. I should just have bought Windows 7 without any problems. :fear:I only bought Windows 8 because I knew it was supported from Asus and I liked the new style and then one month later, 8.1 came. Damn you Microsoft.

Step 1: Open command Prompt as administrator

Step 2 : Use the following

bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING OFF (to disable and ON to enable) + Enter

Step 3 : Restart and you are Done

http://techyblg.wordpress.com/2013/06/24/enable-disable-test-mode-in-windows-8/

I've used this before and it does work.

Also, if it doesn't work correctly in 8.1 it will more than likely be broken in Windows 8 as well.
It's possible that the driver is conflicting with something else you have installed.

The easiest way to test would be to see if he can download the windows 8 iso from microsoft:

"click Install Windows 8 if you have a Windows 8 product key."

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

or just click this direct link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkID=317630

I have a leagal, English win 8 x64 image here, could make a torrent file so that you could download it from me so that you can test if your 8.1 key works with 8
Thanks mate no need. I do have myself such English win 8 64 bit dvd because I am a owner of two win 8's.
The easiest way to test would be to see if he can download the windows 8 iso from microsoft:

or just click this direct link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkID=317630
Do you think that's the right Windows? Isn't that only for upgrading from win7+8? I would like to have an official Windows 8 64 Bit English image from Microsoft like I once downloaded with my laptop when I needed a disk for reinstalling. Well I keep searching.

It just downloads the installer and allows you to save as an iso. Not only for upgrading. It will ask you for a key immediately and tell you if your key will work depending on if you get the Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 installer.

My Asus Xonar DX installed fine, but only while using compatibility mode(win7). No issues whatsoever afterwards. Weird that it doesn't work for you!

It says the key is wrong and at the 8.1 option it says it's a wrong key for the retail version :pimp:. My SB (system builder) version might be the reason. I've got the idea I ask the merchant if I can change my win.

Well as I can see your sound card has support until win8.1 and the hdav1.3 with its hdmi input and output is much more complicate than yours. Weird that you have to use any compatibility mode.

this is one reason i dont buy any dedicated sound card anymore
older vga card is fine, you can have newer driver
but older sound card sometimes get forgotten

Well one of the reasons for me, Just as good of using HDMI out on the v card and update how you get sound from that..
