MSi GTX 260 twin frozr oc doesn't run in 780i (RESOLVED)

****SURFACE MOUNT RESISTOR MISSING****

I got my job back and spent some coin on shit I don't need. This includes two GTX 260's, a Sea Sonic x750 Gold, and a ssd.

One of the cards is new, the other is open box from da 'Egg. The new one runs fine in my 780i (evga). The open box doesn't run, produce heat, POST in the evga. The fans run full blast with nothing happening.

clearly its not a PSU issue...

but here's where it gets funny. The open box runs fine in Gigabyte P35.

Any ideas?

I have one theory, but i don't have the time right now to check it out...maybe the previous owner flashed a bios thats incompatable with the 780i. Is this possible?

thanks or looking

my theory would be damaged PCI-E contacts on the card, i've seen that cause issues that varied between boards.

my solution at the time was to use paper/tape and cover some of the contacts to lock the card to 4x/8x, which allowed it to work in the 'bad' board (the one time it booted without the 'mod', it ran at 1x)

but thats a workaround, not a solution.

it could be something as small as one resistor/diode missing off the back of the card near the PCI-E contacts as well, if you have two identical cards you can look closely and look for any differences between them.

ok, here's some more info...
the pci-e lanes are fine. I loaded my old 8500gt into the third slot. booted up fine, recognized card immediatly. then i tried putting the open box 260 in the third slot, the 8500 in the second slot, and the new 260 in the first slot. it would not let me boot. says "please put card in third slot for sli"

A wild hair got up my ass after I got an RMA # from da Egg...I put the open box into the P35 board I use as HTPC (normally runs a 4650). first thing i noticed after hitting the power button was a reduction in speed from the card fan, then the POST beep (while the card is in the evga, slot 1, i get one long beep and three short beeps). A proper boot to windows 7 32-bit followed that with automatic windows discovery and drivers loaded. I had shit to do, so i was just happy to see the card working, making heat.

What i want to check out (with GPU-Z) is the BIOS on the open box card while it's in the P35. Has anyone heard of a modified BIOS not working in certain motherboards?

OK, this is a post from the evga based board with the new 260. Some other things to note...I tried various ways of getting power to the card...in the evga w/ se sonic, i used pcie 2 x6 AND molex to pcie adapters, as that is what gives it power in the P35 board. Obviously, it didn't matter. Then, i tried taking off the twin slot connector, to see if the case was preventing it from fully seating, that, too did not matter.

I posted a GPU-Z validation with "1freedude" as the name for the open box card that is running in the P35 board as i type this on the evga board. I have submitted a validation from the this computer (evga) as well, but with the name "1freedude new" here

edit...
this edit is from the p35 board. vaildation can be found here

Dude.. I have the exact same same.. but with 680i. and I also run fine with my Biostar P43.

I looked at the PCI contacts and I don't see any missing leads and I too suspected a bios flash from the previous owner since I bought the card from a guy Craigslist.. I should have suspected something is up since I only bought the card for $40 cash.. and tried calling the guy to return the card but the contact number he gave me is no longer working..

It runs fine but on my P43 board so I guess it's ok.. But I'm interested what resolution can you find or what is issue why this is happening...
