MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI Mainboard - any good?

I found the following "MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI Mainboard" for a reasonable price.

Do you guys see any flaws in that "MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI Mainboard"? I do not care for usb 4 or thunderbolt or usb-c.

I want to replace my ASUS PRIME X670-P Mainboard which was bought in may 2023.

I just saw it has a ASUS 3 year warranty which in my point of view is pointless. I had a small email conversation with asus germany which made me upset quite a few days after purchase. The quality is very big lacking of my existing asus mainboard.

-- Thank you for reading.

edit: fixed typo

Imho rather than flaws we should look at what advantages will you get after switching.
Btw it is nearly impossible for a consumer to detect a design flaw.
If I were in your shoes I wouldn't bother switching mobo

What's the reason for switching?

  • 2 years old - i doubt my mainboard has any quality that it will survive another 5 years.
  • Delayed or no uefi updates. there is a online spreadsheet for am4 and am5 mainboards which shows this more clearly.
  • broken uefi for tpm - once disabled it needs a firmware upgrade or downgrade.
  • asus germany support not to my liking as a customer after purchase
  • i suspect performance issues - clock issues.
  • no proper IO Shield. thin paper like metall piece which needs to be insert first when you change the computer case.
  • Aftermarket Intel AX210 has issues with the linux kernel. It needs certain power saving features turned off in the asus uefi
  • one USB port on the back panel is bootable since may 2023. one usb port useable and ~10 useless ports. The same usb bridge case worked flawless on any usb port of my three refurbished notebooks, the hp laptop i repaired. I need usb booting for regular backups.
  • low board quality. - suspective - feels cheap -- firmware seems to have issues in the first months i had it.
  • ripped off plastic connector for usb while doing a jonsbo d41 case review

It seems I can get that X670E mainboard for 230€ or maybe 240€ including shipping. A bonus may be the PCIE 5.0 on the peg slot and better MSI bios.
ASUS uefi is just bad. I had before a MSI B550 gaming edge wifi. I configured a lot the uefi for DRAM, for also a 5800x on a MSI X570 tomahawk wifi.

-- I want to repaste my processor and maybe change the air coooler back to the Noctua NH-D15 from my existing Be quiet dark rock pro 5.
-- I want to cool my DRAM. I'll buy proper 140mm Case fans but i could use old cheap ones also.

I'm well aware of I waste 70€ most likely. I'll use two SATA ports but I'll gain pcie 5.0 on the peg slot

If I were in your shoes I wouldn't bother switching mobo

I see the rrisk that my windows 8 pro "update" license will not activate anymore with the new mainboard as windows 11 pro. I only play with windows 11 pro.
Maybe I'll be unable to setup only an offline user with that windows 8 pro update license. The seller did not explain it to myself properly at that time although i asked too much on the second hand internet platform. I bought a paper box with those upgrade cds. I used that to activate w10 pro and w 11pro in the past.

My data is in my long term gnu gentoo linux installation from 2006.

I wrote a jonsbo D41 case review. I'm well aware of that changing mainboards means building the box new.

USB 4 and usb 20gbps nvme bridge cases are too expensive. USB 20gbps may be a upgrade path later. I do make my encrypted backups now with a crucial p5 plus in a 10gbps usb nvme bridge case. 20gbps is supported by x670E and X670. Many MSI and ASUS mainboards have aftermarket add incards to get usb 4, i have not checked yet that mainboard.

Based on what? If not abused by a cheap power supply or mains voltages full of extreme surges and spikes, or inadequate case cooling, there is nothing to suggest any motherboard that has already lasted 2 years won't provide many more years of reliable service.

"I just got the itch to upgrade" makes much more sense.

I own it. What do you wanna know?

::EDIT::

So far its been pretty good for me - Albeit ive already broken the GPu retention thing for the PCI slot and the NvME heatsink mounting system isnt great but these problems can be overcome.

:::EDIT II:::

I havent used the wifi on it. Im wired right into my router via cable.
I also dont particularly like MSI's bios when it comes to customising fan curves for case/CPU fans. Its not very intuitive But the rest seems to be ok.

The thing doesnt have that many PCB layers compared to more premium MBs so I would get an AM5 support bracket from Thermalright to prevent the MB flexing or warping if youre going to be using a heavy cooler. They are super cheap.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate that

I'm interested if the mainboard clocks well for the processor and DRAM?

Does the mainboard have any big UEFI issues? For example disabling tpm - than enabling tpm but it stays disabled like my current asus board does.

Another flaw of my current asus board
  • FAN headers - low current, only a few fan headers, not fully customiseable fan curves for those fan headers, bad placement of those fan headers
  • No debug leds. Hidden after weeks i discovered that the case power led function as some sort of debug led. That should be communicated better.

I will reuse this Thermalright Cpu Socket anyway.

That construction is not to my liking. Note: this is the usual asus Prime x670-p AM5 socket

Havent tried any overclocking or messing with TPM so youre on your with those things. Just did a little PBO tuning. AMD Expo and left it as it was after everything ran stable. (7800X3D cant OC...)

I dont see why you shouldnt be able to get some more clocks out of your 7600X. Make sure you've got good airflow to keep the vrms cool.

Only big issue I ran into so far was setting up. It should have supported the 7800X3D right out of the box but I had to do some flashback™️to get the ball rolling and that scared the hell out of me as I thought the board was borked.

Thanks a lot.

I just read the manual again.

The msi board has much more current for the fans. Only for Sata ports. It seems i did not saw any usb4 connector for the add in card. Asus wants 100€ for an additional addin card to get usb 4. USb 4 will not be a topic. It seems that board has no lane sharing. the asus board afaik looses two sata ports from the six sata ports when using an expansion slot.

Opinion: Thunderbolt, usb 40gbps devices have very expensive prices. I doubt the price will drop to something reasonable like 25€ in the next 5 years. Therefore whatever if the board has usb4 or not.

I may get a bit more for my current x670 mainboard when i sell it now.

I am also concidering this board over B650 tomahawk because 4x m.2 and no line sharing. Others are tomahawk B850/X870(E) but they dont seem to add a lot.
Let us know how you like it if you end up gettimg one :)

No lane sharing because of the extra chipset that X670E comes with.

I also have this board. Pretty happy until now, but I am not really going into too technical check, or stress it or whatever, so not much to say. What I will add here is that the first PCIe X16 supports bifurcation that I already tested with this
1749581752693.png

and seems to be working fine. So, two more M.2 slots. Of course I wouldn't use something like that with a GPU that would be asking all 75W from the PCIe slot, because then I don't know what would happen considering that those two M.2s will also be asking for watts. But my RX6600 usually doesn't ask much from the PCIe slot, because it gets mostly what it needs from the PCIe power connector, so it looks to be a safe "upgrade"(until it isn't).

Others are tomahawk B850/X870(E) but they dont seem to add a lot.
The reason I didn't gone for an 800 chipset is that the naming seems misleading, while the prices are higher. The 870 is more or less a 650E and the 850 a plain 650. So, from my perspective someone either should go with the top X870E, or an X670. I don't know if there is real value in the USB4 support.

Thanks to anyone who shared their thoughts.

I just ordered it with prepayment. Final price will be told with the invoice. I have a few more days to think or maybe find a better deal.

Asus had issues for two years. I doubt they will fix it. I doubt they will provide uefi updates at all. I had at least two situations where they did not provide any uefi updaates or delayed uefi updates.
In winter there was uefi backdoor with picture mode which had bypassed my encryption, although i do not use windows. Now we had for several weeks status a agesa while others had already status c agesa and some even newer status d agesa. The ASUS board was always on sale for more than 220€.

I did not want to buy a preused Amazon warehouse deal board for 92% of the price. I did not want to buy from NL third party amazon seller.

I suspect X670E will vanish. It may be at the end of the x670E boards.

edit - Just saying onboard audio is worthless and only drives the price of mainboards up. Especially with all those small USB DAC, usb headsets, microsoft teams headsets and other usb based audio parts.
  • My ASUS Prime X670-P Mainboard caused distortions with my speakers. An external usb sound card fixed it
A consumer would usually not care if it's the mainboard fault or the cable fault. I solved it with an external usb sound card, M-audio Air 192|6 usb audio interface.

update. I just bought it from a "fishy seller" with amazon pay. Several websites have the mainboard now on sale. I had issues yesterday with that "fishy" seller from german with fake .at domain. I'm not sure if amazon pay will give me any protection. I wanted to change from money upfront to amazon pay.

I programmed ages ago in C with microcontrollers. I just bought that without checking. I was curious.

I also have this board btw, and a Ryzen 7600 (not X).

The problem I've had, and have, is that it's really bad at reboots, and cold boots, but randomly so. It's the reason I never turn it off, I just let it go to sleep. What happens is it POSTs and then it just stops there. Usually a full power cycle will get it going, sometimes that doesn't work and I'll have to let it sit for a bit until it's working. This happens no matter if I turn on EXPO or not, and Memory Context Restore does nothing to help it. However I do not know if it is actually the board that is the problem or some other part, but I assume it's the board. When I bought it (second hand) it was guaranteed to happen, but now it's only random. Reboot after a Windows update? It might work and it usually does, but it also might not.

Other than that it's fine. It has all the slots I'll (hopefully) ever need.

EDIT to add the RAM is NOT on the QVL. These times are strange, that might play a part in it.
