Hmm, I think you're right... (what do you use to monitor the fan speed of the GC?)
I did test different % below 55, and I thought that it was working because below this, I cannot hear the difference. But I did put the value at like 2%, and since the temp did not increase, I assume there is a minimum value we cannot override... the 2500RPM I guess.
Manual control does work however when setting higher values (I can hear the fans then).

I would assume the Gigabyte guys preferred limiting the tweaking to this value to protect the cards while still offering a low noise? That would be my guess...

I use GPU-Z to monitor fan speed, the card is quite enough for me and runs cool, so i don't really mind. The only issue i have is when i OC the card to anything above CCC limits, 2D clocks do not kick in, so if i OC to 900/1200 the cards sits like that all the time :banghead:

Save an afterburner profile for 3d gaming and leave CCC at default settings. This results in low 2d settings from CCC and whenever you play 3d games afterburner kicks in. CCC automatically reverts to 2d mode once you close your 3d game.

That's how I have my card running. I have the latest f5 bios.

If the fan speed can be adjusted to 2000rpm, it will be a lot quieter, and what the temp will be? go up from 41 to 45? I dont see that is an issue.
hello all,

just thinking about purchasing it but 2500rpm will be really a mess when watching a movie :wtf:

so, in order to fix it, why can't we connect a 5v/7v noiseless resistor cable (ZM-MC1) to the coolers to make it quieter instead of the normal 12v cable linked to the video card

or a fan controller (FAN MATE 2) in order to play with it...

just an idea, maybe stupid after all :p

Every night before going to bed I watch The Daily Show and Colbert on my pc whilst lounging on my bed. These fans don't make any more noise than my stock cpu cooler and I can't hear either when watching movies or otherwise. I think the people complaining about the fan noise must have some defective fans. If not then maybe you should consider giving up 3d performance for quieter lower powered cards that have really slow fans or just have a heatsink solution. Either that or turn your volume up to a level beyond 'whisper quiet'.

You could however try just plugging a couple of pins into your fan. You'll just want to trial it under 3d conditions though.

Thanks for your answer ;)

A 7v noiseless resistor cable should be perfect even under 3d conditions with a temperature around 70°C.

Trying it as soon I will order / get it :p

I had my ears tested recently and they state my ears are super sonic sensitive. But thing is As long as the fans don't sound like a blow drier under normal load conditions (Idle) then I don't care. I know what the difference is too with my video card, during power on the fan does a self test. then slows down usually before or during windows launch.

The noiseless resistor and fan mate 2 solution do not work. Gigabyte 5850 has a smaller connector than noiseless resistor and fan mate 2 does. You simply cannot hook them up.

The fan's idle noisey level is not unacceptably loud. You will be ok with it when playing games. I dont want to overly complain. I got two very quiet case fans and one coolermaster V8 cpu fan. They always work under 1000rpm. You can hardly hear anything at daytime. They sound like nothing at night. This is probably the reason why I cannot stand Gigabyte 5850. People have different tolerant levels. To me, if I hear it blowing all day, I will really get angry.

The bottom line is, if the original reference fan works on the same noise level, it also delivers same or even better performance than Gigabyte 5850. then the question has to be what is the point of designing an aftermarket fan that cannot win the original one. to save cost? obviously not. the fan looks very solid and must be expensive. to piss off customers? probably.

Anyway, I simply dont understand why Gigabyte refuse to fix this very easily fixable fault.

You mean apart from the fact that the fan speed is running at 55% in both 2D and 3D mode? Ohhhh and in 2D mode it's actually running over 100rpm faster than 3D mode in reality.

Lol....I know there was a reason I bought the Asus HD5850 DirectCU which is non reference but does have voltage tweak capability. I am pushed to even get the fan (which is pretty near silent all the way up to 65%) to get past 35% even in serious gaming.

I got a mail from Gigabyte-team Norway saying the issue will be fixed in the next bios update. Release date is not set yet.

I have just ordered the same kind of card that Erixx posted in his first post. I just wonder about this "55%" fan bug. Can I change the fan speed in programs like Rivatuner or ATi Tray Tools?

I have pretty much always used ATT when I have had an ATi card and I intend to do so with this card too, so as long as I can change the fanspeed I won't be affected by the fact that the card won't have a 2D profile (unless I update the bios) as I usually make my own 2D profiles in ATT. I also like to make my own profiles in ATT for games with a "low" 3D profile just to lower the heat if the game isn't very demanding :p

Yes I used the f6 bios posted on the page below (looks like they just released an f7 bios). I tried adjusting voltage but there is no voltage table / registers in RBE 1.25

on my Gigabyte R585OC

GIGABYTE GV-R585OC-1GD Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro...

It works fine did some research and it looks to use the same voltage controllers I have been using it like this for about 3 weeks no issues. I tested my card at gpu 1000 mem 1200 but it would crash on Heaven BenchMark 2.0 after one pass. I can verify this anyway you would like.

Apologies if I'm acting thick but the way you've written your last post I don't know if you mean you have been able to adjust voltage or not. I'm thinking not.

Edit: An update on my own card. For some bizarre reason my card is back at the 2d settings that came with the f4 bios even though I flashed it with the f5 and had the lower f5 2d settings running for a couple of days. Why on earth it's changed back to the f4 settings I will never know but the bios is still shown as f5 and won't allow me to flash it again with the same f5 bios.

@DarknRahl Just wait for F6 :p

@loube Did the voltages change to 5870 specs or did it stay at the 5850 specs? If it didn't change then I see no reason to flash to 5870 bios.

the voltages in RBE are 1.15 and 1.063 with the 5870 bios. the voltages are 1.088 with the f5 bios for R585OC. you can download both bioses and open up with RBE and see the differences. I tried changing the voltages myself but with no reference sheet I don't know what voltages to try, if you put anything different in RBE it breaks the POWERPLAY. The card works but won't do the dynamic 2d/3d speed adjustments. So all I edit on the 5870 bios is GPU and RAM MHZ, Fan settings, and overdrive limit. I can post screenshots if you would like.

Dear loube etc,

with Ati CCC process completley killed from starting, and using Ati TRay Tools, all that what you say, works, including a little voltage tweak!

Are you saying you can make all the same changes with Ati tray tools, if so I understand. I prefer to make the changes to the bios and hard code it to the Graphics card. Also would like to find voltage specs for the Voltage controller and see if the card has some more room.

I have tried that also, but no luck, such a BIOS crashes or the voltage setting is ignored.

More specifically (see this thread earlier) Ati tray tools lets you undervolt it to 0,09 v (to be used with 2D mode for energy/heat saving)

Has anyone heard of anyone flashing the card with the non reference Asus HD5850 Bios (the one I have), then using Asus Smartdoctor to raise the voltages, set fan speeds etc, my card, even though it's not an overclocked edition has a CCC uper limit of 1200mhz on the GPU as stock and Smartdoctor allows voltage adjustment upto 1.35v. Obviously some research would need doing on the memory chips and voltage regulator.
