Some of you might remember a little while back I was asking for you opinions on parts for my brother's PC. Well, last night I sat em down and really went through every item with em and here's what we ordered from Newegg.

C2Q Q6600: $190 free ship
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R: $94 AR, free ship
Antec Nine Hundred: $60 free ship
Thermaltake Purepower 500W: $15 AR, free ship
Sapphire 4850: $130 AR, free ship
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 800: $10 AR, free ship

Almost skated by without shipping costs, newegg is decent comparatively but all in all shipping is generally expensive. I just wanted to order and iCage and on a 16 dollar item the shipping is 8 bux.

No HD. You should get a WD 16MB Cache 640GB 7.2K RPM, heard they were blazing fast for the price, everything else looks good.

Hah! Okay... so I might have missed a piece. :p

We selected a 500GB Seagate Barracuda SATAII: $60 free ship :D

Actually, after leaving my post this morning I realized Newegg must have run out of 900s just before we place the order last night. Luckily, I found another site selling the 300 for $45 (final price with NYS tax, shipping & a coupon code).

Maybe with the difference I can get him a couple of these Sythe Slip Stream fans. ~70CFM @ 24 dBA looks like an insane air:noise ratio.

Alriiiiiiiiiiight!

I've run into my 1st major build problem and need some help. :banghead:

I just assembled everything and it won't post. The PC turns on for a second or five and then restarts itself. I have a feeling it might be and issue with the P4 power plug. The motherboard has an 8 pin connection and I'm running a Q6600, so I'm worried the CPU isn't getting the juice it needs.

Unfortunately, I don't have another PSU with the an 8 pin connection so there's no immediate way for me to test my theory. I'm going to triple-check all of my connections now. Any advice you guys can give in the mean time is much appreciated.

Can you atleast get to bios?
If so make sure you ram is getting the correct voltage and running at the correct speed.

Also I just built a system thinking the same thing but the 8pin connector is not necessary which is why they probably had a black cap over the other 4 available pins.

Bios isn't even loading, which makes me wonder if it's the motherboard. I just took another look at the motherboard's manual and it said that only the extreme edition CPUs should need all 8 pins. I'm afraid I'll have to start swapping parts from this PC just to see if I can narrow down the culprit.

I tried the power supply in my wife's PC and everything started up just fine. Albeit, she's only sporting a Pentium4 3.2GHz but at least I know the PSU works now. I'm at the point of swapping this computer's CPU (C2D) and seeing if I get it to post. At this point I think it's the motherboard, and here's why...

I noticed this rather large bend in the motherboard right after I put the heatsink on. I'm sure I didn't cause this as I was using a flat surface at the time. I was already documenting my build so the camera was ready to go.

does it make any beaps? i wrote down the parts for my friend to build a $500 pc, i went to his house to help since he siad it wouldn't post. turns out it was just he didn't have the stock hsf on all the way, don't hesitate on those push pins :p i took the mobo out, pushed the pins in properly and it worked. i thk it's 6 or 7 beeps mean a cpu problem so make sure you have the push pins in all the way, the heatsink/fan shouldn't feel lose but very solid.

Nah, I pushed, repushed and re-repushed everything in to no avail. :ohwell:

It was a pain in the ass, but I took my precious C2D and tried that instead. Reseated the HSF, plugged it in and got the same old song & dance. Actually, I'm kinda OCD when it comes to a HSF being fully seated so it's rarely an issue. I gently wiggle that sucker back n' forth just to make absolutely sure the CPU is getting cooled properly.

I'm sure if the Antec 300 came with a speaker I'd probably have heard some beeps. All I had to go by was a row of LEDs Gigabyte included on the MB. They would all light up no matter what.

Since it wasn't the PSU or CPU I submitted a RMA to Newegg. Hopefully I'll have everything finished for my brother by X-mas. Maybe in the mean time I'll try the other parts (Mem, GPU, etc.) in my PC to make sure they're AOK too.

I suspect that your OS disc for your laptop is OEM and tied to the laptop. 99% of them are.

Right, we did encounter that already. I have a fresh copy of XP SP3 standing by. Was really hoping to be all done with all that by now. :(
