my CPU is dead... what next?

Hi all!

For the past 5 years, I've been running a decent rig. It runs around a 3570K. My motherboard broke about 6 months ago and I paid over the odds for a low end, hard to find, 1155 motherboard. It has 16GB of memory and a recently bought GTX 1060 (4GB). Well now my CPU has died! I have about £250 to spend.

My question is, should I get a second hand 1155 CPU for about £150? If I upgrade to a later CPU, I'll need a new board and new DDR4 memory. Can I get anything decent for around £250 that will perform close to my old 3570K?

I like to play games, Skryim mostly. It doesn't have to be at the the best quality, just decent. What do you recommend?

Save and upgrade. I would test the CPU in a couple of systems. In all my years I've only seen one cpu die

Saving and upgrading seems very reasonable if you can manage the wait, Otherwise a second hand CPU wouldn't hurt much either because you already have the RAM and such.

I was saving up for months now, and since Ryzen 5 dropped, I recently ordered some parts. It might not run Skyrim as well as a comparable Intel system, but I am building it for the future (again, because I thought the unlocked Phenom II X4 was a good idea, but it lacked perfornance even at 6 cores, because nobody optimized the games AMD CPU's at the time). Fingers crossed it runs modded games fine.

But right now the 3rd gen I5's, i7's and anything higher gen runs about 10-20% better in Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout games than Ryzen especially when OC'ed, the mileage may vary though. It's simply the fact that Bethesda Game Studios never optimized their game engine for AMD CPU's until now. I wish they patched Special Edition, but they won't, never.

If your only reason is to keep playing those titles, you can't go wrong with Intel CPU's.

Two choices:
1) Buy another 1155 i5 or i7, quick look on eBay I see a 3570k for just $118 shipped
if all you play is skyrim you could probably get by with a 2500k, $80 shipped
2) part out your mobo and ram, selling them on eBay, you might just be able to get back the money you sunk into it

In my opinion I wouldn't keep putting money into 1155.

Personally I'm having difficulty justifying the switch to DDR4 myself but you could still upgrade quite a bit without losing your memory (DDR3). It's tough for me because I like the fact that all of my PCs have quasi-interchangeable parts ,and if I were to update one I would feel the compulsion to upgrade all of them. And seeing as how I have 4 PCs that would be no small task. But I'm also a guy who's been wearing the same boots for over five years, and also owns a single pair of jeans (I don't like spending money on myself if I don't have to)

Update your system specs, it's still showing the X48 with a Core 2 Quad.
What motherboard are you currently using, or used with the 3570K?
Is a XEON Processor an option in them?
