My GTX970 has seemingly died...

Was playing Inquisitor:Martyr yesterday when my monitors suddenly went dark. Still had the system, but no video. Immediately thought that the Vidcard died, and further testing has pretty much confirmed this. Even in BIOS the monitors go dark within 30-45 seconds, fans on the card are not spinning (which I've later read that's normal, as the fans only kick in above 60-65c). Card is a ASUS STRIX-GTX970-DC20C-4GD5. I've verified that the system is still operational (still got onboard suckygraphics).

I did get it into Windows this morning and immediately fired up GPU-Z to have a look at the temps and such. The card sat at a nice 39c before blacking out again, so it doesn't seem to be temperature-related.

Before I rip the card apart and start having fun with it: has anyone else had the same issue happen to them, and possibly have a fix for it?

Yep, all are the same. Also tried it with only one of my QHD-monitors hooked up (got one on HDMI and one on DP). Same result, image dies within 45 sec of power-on.

The 970s have a famous flaw, it isn't rocket science. also that fan only kicks in at certain temps, it is 3 Generations old.

True that. It's a very old card in a very old system (i5-2500 on an 8-9 year old mobo). But I'd rather NOT have to fork out the dosh for a new system right now.

Looking to get a 1660Ti as a replacement, though. A friend of mine is stopping by later today with another vidcard that I'll test with, and if that works I'll get the 1660Ti. If that DOESN'T work, it'll be an expensive month...:(

That was my first thought, but since it cuts out even in the BIOS, I've disregarded that idea.

I'm getting hold of another card to test with later today. For now, I've ripped the cooler off the 970 and removed the fossilized goop on it, cleaned both the cooler and the chip and put on some Noctua NT-H1-compound. Time to test it just for the hell of it. Don't expect that it'll work, though.

A 1660 super performs the same as the Ti but costs ~$40ish less.

Yup, have looked at the 1660's as well, and they're deffo an option. Going to wait until Black Week starts here in Norway next week before I buy anything, however. Maybe I can get a 2060 on a bargain.

Tried the other slot, same result. Threw in an old GTX440 that a friend of mine dropped in and it's stabile as all hell. Slow as hell as well, but eh, at least I can run SOME games instead of NO games.

Note that a GPU will enter Windows being in an idle or low power state, so 39C is perfectly normal and NOT a sign the cause isnt a temperature issue.

agree, mine gtx 260 idle is 47c btw, never reapply the thermal, but still not a problem, even run on 90c+ gaming, problem not:D
op ypu might consider rx5700 instead 2060, price gap is pretty close, your call:)

Reapplying paste is a fool's errand for GPUs in their useful life. Same goes for CPUs really. But, it seems to make people feel better and/or seems to be worth trying for many... to each their own. A solution to a hardware problem however... I've never read that in any topic on TPU or elsewhere. That only flies if the initial application was completely crap to begin with.

Reading what's been tried so far, there's a good chance a visual inspection of the board will show some capacitor damage or something else along the power delivery path. Its that or VRAM I think.

Some detailed pics of the board wouldn't hurt @Fjordmonkey ... but I think its deceased. Perhaps you get lucky and you can replace/solder something on the board.

As of writing I've written it off as deceased. Removing and reapplying paste is, at the VERY best, a longshot, but since the card actually powered up and delivered video for a very short while, I'm thinking it's more of an electrical problem than anything else.

The GTX460 I shoved into the box will see me through to black week/black friday gets here. I can play Warframe on it, so that'll have to suffice.

I'll see if I can get some pics of the 970 later.

Bummer. I have an original FTW 970 with the 6+6 pin, and it wont let me oc it at all. If I do and then apply a load it just drops clocks like crazy, and wont run its own factory clocks until I remove it from the system. A huge pain. But if I leave it alone it runs at 1400 with a dip to 1391 now and then. I just let it run with no afterburner or anything like that installed on my x58 system. I plan on sticking my 980 in it when I upgrade. Sorry to hear yours maybe on the way out, it was a good card. Hopefully its just driver related or something.

Card seems very much dead. It happens. I'd upgrade to a RX5700XT or RTX2070. If you're ok with the used market a GTX1070, GTX1080 or Vega64 would be a measurable upgrade from the 970.
