my mining machine just died..

its had about two years running..

it gets power and the gpu logos light up but no signal is getting to the monitor.. the monitor is plugged into the motherboard not any of the graphics cards..

asus Z270-A motherboard low end cpu and two gigs of memory..

what is most likely to have failed.. my first thoughts are the motherboard followed by the cpu... any opinions will be welcome..

or to put it another way.. what bits do i replace first..

Don't you have another motherboard or cpu to see which one failed? Most likely is the motherboard but maybe it was just a failsafe power off, you could try to clear the cmos, it might come back to life.

Sounds like the mobo. You will have to unplug all GPU's and start trouble shooting piece by piece..

How old is the PSU and what brand is it etc?

i have two 850 watt power supplies running seven 3700-ish cards.. each cards draws about 130 watts..

i have just put a bid on an ebay motherboard complete with a 6600k cpu.. if i win that it should solve the cpu or motherboard issue..

maybe its time the machine was stripped down and rebuilt.. it has got a bit dusty.. my enthusiasm for building such things has gone so it will be a chore..

ps.. it was all built back in 2017 run for about a year then switched off.. its been switched back on at the start of this year.. about two years 24/7 running in total.. the cards are all new this year..

Could still be the discrete GPU, did you try removing the gpu and booting the rest on their own.

This is my thought as well. But just in case it might be a bad IGP, have you tried disabling the IGP in the system BIOS and using one of the video connections on a GPU?

i havnt tried anything much as yet... i will try and grab the motherboard cpu combo on ebay though.. the auction ends in a couple of hours..

its costing me about $30 dollars a day not running so i am gonna have to fix it.. he he

right.. just won the auction for one used asus Z270-A with one 6600K cpu... i have also ordered a couple of 8 gig ram sticks just to make sure...

total cost about £210 quid.. ddr4 ram seems pretty cheap at the moment..

yes at a rough guess.. i dont cash it in i stash it in bitcoin.. so far this year i have mined about 1/3 of a bitcoin..

i have the dedicated miner.. six 3070 cards and one 3080... i also have a pair of desktop machines running.. one has a 2080ti and a 3070 the other a 3080 and 3070.. about 720 M/H in total..

i use nicehash..

Do you not have any other rig to test out each GPU? So long as the GPU's work, the rest is an easy replacement.

If tested GPU's, then only thing is either PSU's, Mobo, CPU or RAM. Doubt its CPU so its probably Ram, Mobo or PSU.

the gpus will be fine.. i am pretty sure it will turn out to be the motherboard.. i will try out the replacement bits mobo cpu ram on their own with another psu when they arrive.. if it works i will strip the miner down and replace the lot..

a dud gpu would just show up as one not working..

I guess the easiest option would be to just test the bare mobo+cpu+ram (try swapping the ram too), to see if it works.

the machine can take 8 cards but the 3080 runs that hot on the memory i have left an open slot next to it to help cool it..

back in 2017 it was a fun project now its a long term investment i have to keep running... no fun any more.. to hodle the results i have to pay the power bill and keep the machines running 24/7...

short term its an expense.. long term.. it all depends what happens to the price of bitcoin and eth.. its just something i do...

I've had lots of fun building mine and lots of misery with trouble shooting also. I think its fair to say its like having a second job.

Why I say I had fun building them is I find them completely different beasts to build than your normal everyday PC.

This is why I use workstations to build my mining rigs. Dell T1700's to be exact. Easy to build in, they take those 1pcie to 4 adapters (to add more GPU's) and I rarely ever run into issues. With them being workstation grade, they tend to be a bit more solid for 24/7 use (in theory I guess).

update.. while waiting for the new parts to arrive i decided to (using another monitor) try plugging the different monitor into a gpu instead of the motherboard just to see if the motherboards graphics output had died.. the monitor in use has one of the older style connectors the gpus dont else i would have tried this before..

before starting i pressed the on button not expecting any change.. the machine has been stood for a couple of days..

lo and behold the bloody thing fired up and is running perfectly..

i shall leave it alone while its working.. it my fail again or it may keep working.. i dont believe in miracles..

still having some spares on hand is no bad thing if or when it does fail again.. so no great loss in the grand scheme of things..
