Just wondering if i have to use the sound card that came with my motherboard, or can i use another one (Asus etc) in the PCI-E x1 slot with no issues?

Thanks

It is a normal PCI-E x1 slot, though there is very little room behind it. You don't have to use the card that came with it. Any PCI-E audio card will work in any of the PCI-E slots, or the PCI-E x1 slot if it's short enough. I'd at least give the MSI card a try to see if you like it first.

I've had it for a good few months.

This was purely curiosity. Future planning.

It's not the best, just as good as onboard tbh.

in retarded hell
sry to hi-jack but just a quickie

since i put in my 5850 to tri-fire with 5970, I have had to remove my soundcard (Creative X-Fi Gamer PCI) and use the one provided by asus (SoundMAX X-Fi) which goes in the very top 1x PCIe slot (onboard sound)

Does any one know if i can install ANY PCIe soundcard (i.e Creative X-Fi Gamer PCIe) and put it in the 1x slot or is it dedicated to the crappy asus soundmax only?

cheers, and sry for hi-jack

Yes, you can put anything in that first slot. It is wired for PCI-E and the codec.

In the case of the cards that ship with the big bang and rampage they're codec risers for pci-e so you can use any other pci-e card with that slot too, thats also why it sounds like onboard(thats what it is)
