My pc was fast as a cheetha, now its slow as a turtle

my bad my bad i dunno why the word "restore" came in my mind
i acctually did a full reformat:D i put a windows cd and intalled it

lol ok, that's alright then! Anyways, you're still getting slowness after that eh?

hmm, looks like a failing hard drive to me, i suggest checking if it's under warranty and if so, backup all your data and get it replaced asap. If it ain't under warranty, buy a damn new one then. lol

Peace :rockout:

I have a hard drive, and it says its running on PIO.. :-( all the other channels are going on DMA, how can I fix this?

you can turn on "let bios decide" in control panel -> system -> device manager -> IDE/ATAPI settings, on primary (or secondary) IDE channel. than reset the computer, enter the bios and set up the hdd access to UDMA2 or whatever.

if the UDMA2 is set correctly, and after a while (day or two) returns to PIO mode, this is probably time to back up all the data, and start searching for warranty.

my hdd did this, and now it's dead.

PIO mode slows computer drastically, so this also applies to tigger69 from the "my computer was fast as a cheetah' post

best of luck!

any advice on making this not happen again?

If you haven't gotten to cleaning out the Case/Fans/Heatsink....then buying a new drive Is a waste of money......you stated you've had the system for 2yrs.....and you more than likely never opened It up....so chances are that you have some serious buildup of dust In your Heatsink...that'll make the fan struggle(Hence the Noise)...and the temps to rise....and the Entire system to slow down.

On page 1 I suggested you clean out your fans and Heatsink.....have you even done that yet??

Yes i agree, clean out all dust before buying a new drive...and also, have you been moving your pc around alot? Like, going to LAN parties...taking it to the computer shop...stuff like that?

aite i'l do it today and keep you posted :toast:

Systems will tend to slow down as they get older expecially if you don't keep your system clean and run system cleanup. I have a 2 year old pc it does the same thing but ive opened it up and cleaned out the dust as ive upgraded my video card just recently. as for the noise I think its normal cuz my pc isn't over heating or anything if it just sounds like a fan running you should be ok just as long as its not doing it constantly.

Maybe service pack two is bringing down your speed. Have you tried this yet?
