I've tried installing my Vista disc on 3 different DVD drives now, its scratched and done. How can I get a new disc or where can I find a file on the internet so I can install Vista? I have the CD key.

What about getting it cleaned/repaired. Some shops over here will put it in a machine and repair it for about UK £2.50. I had this done with a Crysis DVD, it now works like a champ:rockout:

Would it be illegal to "borrow" someone's dvd and using your own key?

I don't think it would be, it wouldn't be any different than when corporations upload OS images to their servers and install it over their intranet with individual keys.

Then you have to go to the manufacturer (Dell, Acer, etc.). I think getting it fixed at a video store for a dollar is a good idea.

You need a "Retail" copy in order to get a replacement disk and you have to CALL microsoft directly to order it.

They will ask why? and then ask for serial number on the inside edge of the dvd as proof.

The replacement is cheap but not free. It's around 40$.

The way I have always looked at it is, when you buy an operating system, your buying those numbers and letters. I wouldn't think the disc itself matters. I have copies of all M$ OS's but I have all legit keys. As long as your have your legal key, I would think that you'd be okay.

idk, I may get in trouble for saying this but, id just download the OS and use your serial key.

Try to copy all the data of the DVD it MIGHT be possible and try to do it on another DVD player if that files then with some luck you be able to make a bootable Vista disk.

I would def go with getting the disc repaired at a movie or game store. I believe they use a very mild rubbing compound and then polish/buff it. Got some DVD fixed too and they look brand new- after all its really just plastic.

My uncle had the same problem with his vista disc. He tipped the computer over while it was running and the dvd drive scratched it all to hell. He showed me this trick... all you need is a sponge and some Comet cleaner. Just run the disc under water and sprinkle some comet on it and rub it with the sponge in a circular motion. Wash, rinse, repeat until the major scratches are gone and you're left with only fine scratches from the comet and the sponge.

Ok I've been making a image disc of Vista Ultimate 64-bit and my computer won't detect the disc. All of my other computers detect the disc except my upgraded desktop... Won't even find the disc in Windows. Nor will it find it during boot up. Anyone know what could be happening?
