alright so im kinda new at this computer stuff, and ive been reading around at OCling, ive had my MSI n9600gt since my p4, now i have a newer system and still running my gt with no more bottlenecking, i see these threads on OCing and changing the voltage to make it run more power, right now im using EVGA precision tools to overclock it somewhat but i wanna get the most out of it since i got the card brand new for free. any suggestions?

Just buy a new card, the 9600GT was low-end when it was new let alone now.

False, Red machine! the 9600 was just under the high end when it was launched, they were priced at 200 €!

I am talking because I had them untill beginning of last year (and still have them running now in other computers) The 9600GT were the best "buck for the bank" in their day. lol

voltchange could only be possible with nibitor and biosflash.
some cards are not at full voltage.

http://www.mvktech.net/content/view/4892/143/

download+ save your bios with gpu-z with .rom ending

then look in voltage extra if you are at max.

but this is not a bad card and not worth the overclock you could maybe get with more volt.

i would just oc it like it is.

Overclocking wont give you more than 10-15% which is unoticeable.

Ignore this. Bios flashing is the last thing you want to do to your card. Stick with the precision tool.

I had 9600GT before time and its not a bad card ,but its old . My advice to you is to buy 5670 or 6750. Ati cards are cheeper than Nvidia , so i decide to give you Ati cards . You dont want a fast , expensive card , this will make it ! :toast:

agreed my 13 year old is still using one in her gaming computer and can play most modern games @ 1024x768 on DX9 w/o issue.

But I will also say that it won't do for very much longer.... I would suggest looking at a overclocking thread like this one....http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclock-graphics-card,1916.html ..... Or just google "Video card overclocking " and find something like it.

Next I would start saving up for some upgrades.... Which might be as simple as just upgrading your video card.... or depending on your spec you might need to upgrade everything.

No, they weren't. The 8600 was fail but the 9600 GT has nothing to do with it. The GSO was a rebadge of the 8800 GS, which underperformed against the GT. The original 9600 GT (before they cut the ROP's down) was basicly a weaker, but shrinked down 8800 GT (G92 to G94). It gave pretty good performance for it's time and was affordable. Also, they scaled very well in SLi. So they were suited for SLi as well.

Actually, the 9800GT was a rebranded 8800GT. Both used the same G92 core, with the same clocks. And the 9800GTX was a rebranded 8800GTS, just OC'd.

I don't even know why nVidia bothered with the 9000 series...

Not talking about the 9800 GT, the G94 core is made out of G92 bits. And their derivatives (GSO, GS etc.). nVidia shrinked them down after the renaming though.

Wow have gone way offtopic
Dozer if you want to practice using the precision tool, the core clock is the one which improves the performance most. Leave the memory clock alone since it doesnt impact performance almost at all. Raise the Core Clock 10 MHz at a time and test is the overclock stable either with the tool, playing your favorite games or graphics benchmarks. While doing all this you have to keep a close eye on the temperatures so it doesnt cook itself.

BF3? Omg! The card came out in 2008, back then it was okay, not much behind 9800, and great in SLI (me had!). Now, today, needless to say it is out of the races.

Due to its tiny cooling fins, hidden in the fan cover, dust needs to be removed by disambling the whole thing. I did it recently and found lots of dust.

I played BC2 on my MSI N9600GT at 60+ FPS on low with my I7 920 at 4ghz when I was waiting on my 5850 to arrive. It should play BF3 on low at atleast 30FPS

this is exactly what i did, looks like my card barely hits 50c even when i play for a few hours on BC2, and my house has no ac so my room gets pretty warm.

another question, what are good idling temps? and what are dangerous temps?
