Need a new HDD for my pc... minimum 2TB!

ok, so based on my specs (check my specs), which hdd should i go for?? list a couple of alternatives, since the market here in europe can be a bit pricey compared to U.S...

i will mainly use my pc for video editing and storage.

budget: uh... $100-200

i hope to find a SILENT hdd too!

WD Blue drives will be very quiet.

It also matters on whether this will be a data drive or system drive. If system, then you need to go for a performance drive and ideally an SSD nowadays.

Toshiba X300 4TB. It's faster than WD Black and way faster than WD Blue, but not as quiet as WD Blue.
Cheaper alternative is Toshiba P300 2TB.

Remember, WD Blues's come in 2 different speeds. I would think you would want a 7,200 rpm drive.

Seagate barracuda 2 TB 64MB cache, great units, have 1 2TB unit and another 320 just for games ...64GB SSD for Os and daily programs..!

Hmm, I have 3 Barracuda 2TB drives, but 2 of them are from an older and better batch. The third one died on me in 10 days, got it replaced ofcourse and that one is happily spinning. Though just a tad slower compared to the older ones.
As for european prices, they are very affordable. I don't hear them often, only when cold booting, but I suppose in a fanless environment it could be different.
Imo they are silent.
You could look for WD red drives, black is a bit pricier, but also a bit faster.

As for seagate, the better ones are the ST2000DM01-1CH1. The addon 1ER1 is the newer one which died on me and is a little bit slower. Also has some poor reviews. Not their best batch, but time will tell how long this one will work.
Still have 2 old barracudas, the ST3500320AS and the 418AS, don't even recall how old they are but they are still working fine. Must be 7 or 8 years and had them running upto last year. Finally put them in the closet after the third 2TB drive. They now hold backups of my win7 and 10. My case allows hotswapping of bare drives so I can Always slide them in.

yes, that is correct; im looking for a hdd to my additional things. right now, if you look at my specs, i have a 250gb ssd for my OS. can i split it up to say 2 partitions, i.e 1 = for OS (say 100gb) and the rest = for random things, or should it be OS-dedicated all the way without splitting it up?

that 2tb seagate was actually one of the candidates i was looking into. it fits good.

and from my understanding, it doesn't really mean THAT much if i get a hdd with 64mb cache instead of one with 128mb cache, yes? because 128mb seems to be a massive jump on the price to me...

so. my choices so far:
1: for a 2tb: Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM006 64MB 2TB
2: for a 3tb: Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM008 64MB 3TB or WD Blue WD30EZRZ 64MB 3TB (both 3tb of these are about the same price)

which ones you recommend? they are all within my range, but the 2tb is about $40-45 cheaper than the 3tb (yes, keep in mind that i live in europe, so the prices here are heavier than over at U.S)

Unless you want a RAID setup better to go for 1 big drive- it will take up less space, use less power and create less heat.

Okay, so my previous (and old 1TB) hdd took the night last night + the back of it somewhat came "loose", so it's "gone". Therefore, i plan on getting a new hdd, which is the reason i've awakened this thread.

Previously, i went for the #1 down below, and im very happy with that buy. been working like a charm so far. but it's 1 year ago i bought it, so are there better alternatives out there or should i just go for the same buy again, perhaps? right now, i only have the 2tb below and a single 250gb ssd for windows 10.

I always use WD Blacks, best performance and warranty on those. I had a Seagate 3TB once, it had an untimely death just as every other Seagate I ever bought. I don't recommend them.

oh i see... but wow, they are SO expensive compared to the Seagates... the cheapest WD Black i could find was over twice the price as the mentioned Seagate. that is too much above my budget. i dont live in US, so i gotta take that into consideration as well..

Just saw that you have a SSD, so the built in 8 GB "SSD" isn't a big deal, but the 5 year warranty is, IMHO.

If you want speed and reliability, get a Seagate IronWolf Pro. Not exactly cheap, but it comes with a 5 year warranty and 2 years free data recovery.

I've recently bought the 8TB one which is excellent (and pricey).

Check them out and see if there's one in your price range, or can stretch to one.

The non-Pro version still has a three year warranty I think and is therefore still worth considering. The WD Reds might be worth a look too. They're the competition for my NAS grade drive, but it concerns me that WD dropped the Red Pro version with the 5 year warranty.

I wasn't commenting on the drives you'd suggested and to be honest hadn't really looked. Just suggested what I'd bought since I'm satisfied with it. Looking at those now though, steer clear of the Blue, since that two year warranty really means that they will fail. I've got several Greens, the previous branding, but the same drive and a lot of those are showing problems with corrupted data, although they're still going. They're nice and quiet though (and slow) better noise performance than the 8TB I'm using now, but that's not worth it in my opinion.

@BadFrog said that the 3TB drive in your list is unreliable, which I reckon is probably true. Google it for more details if you're still interested in it, though. I'd go for 4TB myself, anyway.

Finally, you do have a descent backup regime? Regardless of what you buy, you must have this, or you're guaranteed to lose data eventually. And yes, it does mean at least double the cost for hard drives, unfortunately. How important is your data to you? If it's roughly around the "critical" mark, then there's no getting away from it.
