my new motherboard has a 24 pin connector and my power supply only has a 20 pin. am i screwed, and need to buy a new power supply? or can i just plug in the 20 pin and go for it.

You can plug it in, they're compatible. The 4 missing pins are just extra.

btw,
Afaik, PCP&C has a "retro-fit service" where you can upgrade your PSU yby modifying it. They might be able to put those missing pins on it.

ok i should have just read the book that came with the mobo. lol same answer as you guys gave me.

not expecting high clocks anyways cant find my mounting screws for my tuniq tower so i am gonna have to use a stock intel cooler. on an e2180 but i'm using the stock cooler from a q6600, it has a copper slug in it and weighs a bit more than what came with the e2180.

mods feel free to delete if you want to save bandwidth. sorry

Such an adapter does no good for him as his board supports 20pin ATX. The board basically has an built-in 20-24pin adapter.

First of all if you require quick answers try using descriptive titles instead.

The 4 extra pins are to distribute the power over more wires since with certain setups amperages get quite high and cables could melt. When overclocking a quad to 3.8 I would personally recommend getting a power supply with the extra 4 cables.
Seeing how you spent plenty of cash on your system it would be stupid to take the risk.

I'm just nitpicking here - but all Intel LGA775 boards power the CPU from the 4pin "P4" connector.
