Convert this:
1.28GB
AVI
50FPS
640x512

To this:
Less than 1GB
MPEG-4
50FPS or 30FPS
640x480

And it must be free. AND it must not lose too much quality - hopefully hardly any. Thanks!

i think TEMPG suite has a trial and it should be able to do all that. Give it a google.

AVS used to sell a suite of 5 products - some of which overlap.

It looks like the video converter would do the job.

It is a little quirky though and I can't say that it has been completely trouble free. However I have run 4 instances of the program simultaneously with no problems. So you should judge for yourself. Overall, I would recommend it.

However there are also a lot of freeware utilities and even video converter plugins for firefox.

do a quick search on download.com for freeware utilities and see if one of those might work. :)

Well I'm trying to convert it so I can upload it to YouTube. And YouTube doesn't like AVI so I want to convert it to MPEG-4. Also need to make the video under 1GB.

By the way - that version of AVS is only an evaluation. That means I'm going to have a watermark on my video, which is fucking gay. I've already tried AVS. Windows Movie Maker just makes the quality terrible. You can't save as MPEG-4 anyway.

I didn't mean to imply it was freeware. No luck with download.com? Here is a list of all of the Windows freeware utilities they have.

Couldn't Window Media Encoder or Movie Maker do that?

Movie Maker can't save as MPEG-4. Besides, it gives it crap quality.

I'm also hoping I can use a program that will keep it at 50FPS as it was recorded.

I use Any Video Converter. I think it gives you 3 minutes in the free version.

Tried it. Ruined my quality. Can't convert to MPEG-4 unless it's for a phone, in which case it's terrible quality.

Have you tried handbrake?
http://handbrake.fr/

It's free, fast and you can set the bitrate/filesize/fps/etc; but do understand what the options do (esp the 'quality' option...it's not a linear scale) otherwise you'll end up with a huge file.

BTW, what kind of movie has a 50fps rate?
(EDIT: is it a capture from a PC game?)

I used Fraps to capture a video of me playing a game and I have it set to 50FPS.

what about install XViD Codec and use Virtualdubmod?

Already did that. I forget why it didn't work, but it didn't.

CS4 Media Encoder or Roxio 10 is your best bet. I use them everyday

edit: the only free stuff i used. is crap! bad quality! Media Encoder either CS4 or Windows will work with mp4 files. Roxio and other do but the quality goes way down

Have to throw in another vote for Handbrake. Don't have to install anything but Handbrake. It's what I've been using to rip my dvds to my file server for streaming. Extremely easy to do, has a bunch of presets that you can try before going on your own. You can also check the handbrake forums on their site for user made preset as well.

Handbrake
AutoMKV
Any Video Converter
Avidemux
Super
FormatFactory
VirtualDub
The list goes on...

Handbrake is probably the best mixture of power and ease of use and reliability for most people. AVIdemux is easy to use and has a lot of options/filters, but it can be picky with files. I tend to use AutoMKV for most "serious" stuff since it has more options if you need them. Such as multiple ways of deinterlacing.

Really, they all have their plusses and minuses depending on what you need them for. For instance, SUPER quality can kinda suck and it can have a mind of its own for bitrate settings, but it makes for a great drag-and-dropper for throwing lots of crap onto an Ipod or Zune quickly.

I don't know if you're aware, (let's see if I can write all this straight...), but .avi is a container, while mpeg-4 (divx/xvid) is a file format/codec you put into a container, mpeg-4 (h.264) is a file format/codec you put into a container, and mpeg-4 (.mp4) is a container. There are many possibilities when someone says they need something "in mpeg-4." I would think most people are referring to xvid/divx in an .avi when they say that.

.avi probably isn't the youtube problem. It probably doesn't like the weird codec Fraps puts in that container. And now having said that, I don't know if those other programs will like that codec, either. So if whatever other programs you try don't work due to maybe only using built-in codecs, VirtualDub should definitely convert your file since that's what's used in pretty much every "How do I convert this Fraps file?" discussion on the internets.

Don't forget to install all your codecs first

A lot of people don't like this...IDK WHY

k_lite_Mega_codec_pack.

Because it's kind of crappy and has redundant codecs in it that can cause problems. If someone wants to use a codec pack, CCCP is usually the way to go. Heck, it's even endorsed by the guys who created .mkv.

I just need something that convert an .avi to a good quality video for YouTube.

I tried HandBrake and it would say "Encoding Finished" but I'd have no converted file.

How big is the file? Could you upload it someplace and then we could take a crack at it? I'll give you a temp account on my ftp server if you want.

If you do that, we'd need to know what output parms you want.
