My dad has been doing a lot with Excel visual basic (doing financial simulations which seems to use a lot of cpu power). Basically, he wants the program to run faster.

Current specs:
Athlon 64 X2 5000
Asus M2r32-MVP motherboard (doesn't support AM2+)
2 gigs of ddr2 ram (@ 800 mhz i think)
XP SP3

Im guessing a quad core would do the trick, but I am torn between either going to Phenom II or using an old qx6700 i have. I'm assuming the intel would be completely fine, but would Phenom II offer better performance for this type of thing? Either way I'm going to have to upgrade the motherboard, so it is really down to whether I want AMD or Intel.

Well see, I have an intel qx6700 in storage, so that would end up being cheaper, as i could just grab an intel board. But my main question is if upgrading to Phenom II would be worth it. Would Phenom II quads be any faster than my qx6700?

Asus M2r32-MVP motherboard (doesn't support AM2+) - Wrong
The board does support upto Phenom X4 9950 125W CPU, It will not allow OC. If you just put in that Phenom and increase the ram to 4GB you are set. You can get a 9550 here at throw away price.

cheapest and easiest upgrade in my opinion. You don't need to reinstall all the programs and configure etc.

I just checked on the cpu support list. Also probably few months back when I was looking at this board for my server, I called up Asus to confirm the cpu support, but ended up not using this board.
