Time to upgrade, thinking about it for some time, so now that Windows 11 doesn't support chip decided to pull the trigger. Use it for gaming, occasional overclocking, and everyday use.
What might I be missing? Cooling? Memory?

  1. Intel Core i7 6850K
  2. Corsair H115i 104.7 CFM Liquid
  3. Asus STRIX X99
  4. G.Skill Trident 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3200
  5. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
  6. Samsung SSD 960 PRO 512GB
  7. EVGA SuperNOVA P2 850W Platinum
  8. Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV ATX Mid Tower
Upgrade
  1. Intel i9 11900K
  2. Keep
  3. Asus ROG STRIX Z590-A GAMING
  4. G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-4000 CL18
  5. Keep
  6. Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280

Thanks for your input

For Intel, 10900K would be better with 10 cores but your choice.

Yes I struggled with this choice. 10 cores vs 8 and a faster base clock speed, but the 11900K beats it with PCIe 4.0 support for SSDs and gaming performance. The 10900K is about $65 cheaper, so am still undecided.

Oh I didn't know that. Released this month? How long does it usually take mobo manufacturers to release with the LGA1700 socket?

Availability is likely to be in short supply when they first come out. You'll also be able to see how Alder Lake performs, and if you're not impressed, you could grab 10th or 11th gen instead.

Went ahead with the changeout and everything went fine. EXCEPT! Bad back panel audio. Front panel worked fine so Asus said send in, returned to Amazon for identical board (which had gone up $60(?)). Had spent a couple of hours reinstalling software and apps so a question I should know the answer to. Can I just install the new board and and newly configured SSD and just boot up? Will I run into any issues? The bios will need updating and can do that with Asus's bios flashback before the first boot. Anything else I'm not think about?
Thanks

If it's the same SKU, the motherboard replacement should be uneventful and your system drive should boot cleanly.

Windows licensing is tied to the motherboard's serial number so you may need to contact Microsoft technical support to transfer the license if you registered Windows with the faulty board that you returned.
