Built a system for someone thinking Rocket League would work on iGPU. No dice, just told me Friday something is being bought or ordered.

In the likely occasion I'm unable to convince them to wait until Aug. 20th. What to buy for $300 or less?

Current build

i5-8400
Gigabyte H370 Gaming 3 Wi-Fi
475w(?) psu, EVGA if I remember right
4K HDMI screen to be used at lower resolution for gaming.

Used GTX 970-980, for such a penny is hard to compete with the current prices of video cards, also GTX 1060 6GB is another deal, if you could fin it on the desired price tag, (GTX 1060 3 GB is not in the list, not even blink a aye on it, despite price or availability)

also Radeon R9's models could be another thing to bring if you found'em in the desired price range.

Is Rocket League the primary game they play?

A 1050Ti should play that game no problems at 1080P, maybe even higher with some tuning, and be low enough on power consumption to be a total non-issue. Maybe a GTX1060 if they want higher res gaming, but I can't recall RL needing really beefy GFX cards...but I do recall trying iGPU at one point in time a couple years ago and it wasn't the best...barely 25fps lol.

I think an RX560 would be a good AMD alternative as well.

I haven't played RL in quite a while, so maybe it's changed or needs more GPU power, but I'd bet one of those GPU's would handle it quite nicely in all honesty. A 1050Ti is near a GTX770 performance-wise, which from what I recall was more than enough for maxed out at 1080 when I played it.

Won't accept used. Found 1050ti still in the box for $100 and no go cause private seller.

Appreciate the general recommendations. Are there any brands I should disinclude from my searches. To be even more specific would a Gigabyte/Aorus card to match the mb be a bad target.

They play Rocket League now on an old laptop with graphics card in it. That is bound to change with a more powerful card and desktop.

MSI, ASUS and Gigabyte GPU's have a 3 year warranty from the date of manufacturer, no invoice needed.

Same performance

If a 770 GTX 4GB were made, I'd get it for a better price over a 1050Ti, otherwise a 970GTX, 280/280X/7970, 380/380X, 290/290X/390/390X. Or a 470, 560, 570, 480, 580.

Just give it a blast with an air duster then wipe it down with some rubbing alcohol, It'll look new and he wont know the difference so long as there aint any serious markings on the card. It worst comes to worst go into a PC repair shop and ask them if they have any empty 1050ti boxes as you need one for a school or college project or something.

Since he's getting you to build a PC for him, im guessing hes not too savvy in the tech department and thus wont know the difference. The only thing that could throw a spanner into the works is if he demands to see the invoices for the items you purchased.

Ive dealt with real headstrong like that. you could tell them they are saving a significant amount of cash and the parts are coming from someone I know and trust and they still fight me every step of the way.

If it has to be new, a GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1060 6GB or RX580 8GB. Get one with a nice quiet cooler.

Well, now days since price cards might look insane used market is a #1 option for many, but i totally understand and respect that decision,

So, with your $300 max money for a GPU GTX 1050ti will appear as well as AMD radeon 560,570 and if possible or in your budget 580!

I don't know why everyone is so scared of the 1060 3gb. It's a great card at a great price. It won't do 4k gaming, but... I mean, In my opinion, not even a 1080 is acceptable for 4k gaming, so that's in the eye of the beholder, and the OP says it won't be used for 4k anyway. It beats the pants off a 1050Ti for 50-60 bucks more. Sure, the 1050Ti has more memory, but we all know what a sham that is.

That being said, if the budget is 300 bucks, you can find a 1060 6gb in that range. You can't go wrong with that if you want to spend the whole budget. At the $300 price point, 1060 6gb is the undisputed king.

RX 580's have come down to pre mining prices (for some models) here in the UK (£250-£280 which usually equates to the same in $) which is pretty good considering the new AMD Raise the game promo just announced which includes 3 pre release games. Promo also available with RX 570 though prices here are so close to 580's there is no reason to go with a 570 over a 580. Of course a 1050ti will suffice if this is all they need the GPU for though it's better to have more GPU overhead if possible than just enough.

I'd be more forceful with them. The whole soybean boat diverted from China and front page post warning about another boost in profits for companies manufacturing in China so neatly aligns with the target date for GTX 11xx I'm struggling. Another hit to prices on current cards would be... less than enjoyable.

As someone with no practical experience with gaming or graphics card performance I took a hard look at previous generation cards. Kept coming back to the reasons why I sold my i5-2400 machine while it was still completely usable. It won't be for much longer if you have any resource hungry daily use for it. They rightly want something that will be capable of holding up to games that won't even start being produced this decade.

Hi ho hi ho, off to every webshop on the continent I go. o_O

Edit: Almost forgot one fairly significant question. Will a 1060 6GB or AMD equivalent come closer to throttling the gpu or cpu?

i5 8400 and mid range 1060/580 are pretty much a good match, I don't see any bottleneck happening in that scenario.

Also talking 1160 is useless, no one knows they're going to retail for $250, wouldnt be surprised if they were closer to $400 with current gen maybe coming down slightly upon release

Even a 8400+1080Ti will be just fine. The CPU is fast enough not to bottleneck the GPU.

Netflix and BD movies. I'm fairly sure RL wouldn't transcend all life as it was previously known going from HD to 4K at 60Hz.

Equip for the heaviest use and that is gaming.

Same goes for wash machines
These are the best ones- most durable- last 20 years typically or till rusted out. Whirlpool Direct Drive which were Kenmore, Roper, Amana, Kitchen Aid, Estate.
whirlpool-direct-drive-washer-whirlpool-zen-washing-machine-manual-whirlpool-washer.jpg

Vs Digital washers which are From Samsung, LG, Bosch, Admiral, Frigidair/Electrolux/GE Based, Haier, Fischer&Paykel Whirlpool/Kenmore/Maytag/Admiral(Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos/Calypso). Includes Old Timer Switch Maytag Washers or their Neptune Lineup (Top Loaders or Front Loaders)

People would ask me what I recommwnded and it is the washer pictured above- some said they wouldn't buy used goods, well guess what 500-1000 dollars thrown away on the digital crap

That is beyond a stretch for any comparison you might have hoped to draw here.

Unless you can substantiate this divergent line through large household appliances with evidence of illicit behavior in underground darklaundries, counterfeit products, and a sector of the population hoarding sizable collections of them away in ill ventilated closets. Vastly reducing their lifespan through heat and constant use. :)

I was An Appliance repairman, laundry, those newer machines are abused and not nearly as durable as the machine I showed.

No worries, it just seemed a strangely reversed analogy. If anything this would appear to be the durable age we are in. Given how flat the plane is looking backwards at 8 year old processors and previous generation gpu holding their own still.

Appliances are in a manufacturing low point. Everything that used to be made better is. :)

What My point was that even though the machine displayed is better than whats out they wanted a new appliance when the old used one would outlast it

Was successful in not giving any thought towards this today until they called. Proving my lectures on cooling had sunk in.

This brought about the final round a day early, looking at 1060 reviews on TPU after picking the two I thought were best. My first pick was Asus' best 1060 the overclocked Strix 6GB. It got a 9.0 vs a 9.8 for MSI Gaming X. For equal money I doubt that score looks anywhere near as lopsided.

What do I know though other than this is going in one of those airtight jails for abusive lighting schemes that pass as cases nowadays. Really like the built in PWM fan headers with auto setting so case fans still react to cpu temp while card fans are stopped.

Thoughts?

I really like both of those cards, but putting 3 fans on a 130 watt card does not make sense. W1zzard really dinged the Strix card for its noise level, as he is apt to do. Just get whichever is cheaper.
