Got my E6400 rig today and I am using the stock cooler with the stock compound and running stock speeds. My idle temps were 51*C. I placed silver compound on it and it's still running 51*C idle. Is that normal?

You might want to check if the heatsink is put on correctly.
Just wondering, but what is the room temp?

And to add to anticlutch: Are you using any software or bios controlled fan speed settings?

Room temps are 77*F. What is the limit on these chips anyway. Heatsink is pretty much idiot proof, just snap it down.

I think the upper limit is around 60C. If your room temp is 25C, you should be getting mid 40's at most... I think that you should try to reseat the heatsink, and put only a rice grain sized amount of thermal compound.

Now I am cooking with gas. One of my pins wasn't seating properly on my heatsink. Looking at 43*C idle, which coming from an X2 3600 is HOT.
