Basically I've got a £500 budget, but the condition is I can only buy from PC world... don't ask why, it's complicated :D

So here's a link to the laptops they have:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops/703_7006_70006_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html?sPageInfo=3_20

So bearing in mind £500 is my max, what's the best one?

I know nothing about laptops, however I'm thinking T4500 2.3GHz with 4GB ram is pretty sweet for any laptop, right?

Why do they all come with 64 bit tho, surely that's just going to a be a complete ass pain to get regular software for?!

And also, why is it that the Pentium Dual Core P6000 (1.86 GHz) laptops are priced higher, with a lower clockspeed, and (I assume) that Pentium Dual Cores are worse than Core 2 Duos?

Acer Aspire 5551 is the one I'd pick. Triple core, 4gb's RAM, HD4250 graphics.

ooo wow, I didn't realise they had triple core processors (I never knew they even existed) o_O

This is why I love TPU, the members spot stuff I would never notice... my knowledge of AMD is VERY poor!

Hmm, it does look very good :D Thanks erocker, any other suggestions too? :)

Hmmm well it's for my girlfriend, and she BUMS Sims mega hard...

but this is where it gets confusing, i3 is obviously faster right... but that lappy has less ram and worse graphics which kinda sucks, I'm not sure how much of a factor battery life is I'd have to ask her. But in terms of battery for the other, how long would you expect it to last? And clock for clock, can the AMD keep up with the i3 in a *reasonable* fashion?

It's kind of a "flip of the coin". With the Acer you get better graphics. Actually the Core i3 systems will probablly have better battery life too.

Exactly.

I looked at the Acer and thought how nice the graphics are compared to GMA but then I remember that games and laptops don't go hang-in-hand unless your spending twice as much than he wants to......I guess I just want too much lol

Either one would be fine for Sims to be honest, personal choice will play a big roll in what one you chose. :toast:

I gotta say the AMD graphics sound a lot more appealing than some poop GMA haha :)

Yea you're right, gaming and laptops don't really go hand in hand, however with a tri-core, more ram, AND better graphics... you can't really go wrong for this budget eh? :p

Knowing my luck, they won't have it in store and they'll get all arsey about how I can only use my credit in-store and we'll end up getting some p.o.s

She wanted an iPad with the £500 but they said it HAD to be a laptop, because the reason she got the money is because her previous laptop broke due to motherboard failure... and they will only let her replace it with another laptop of the same value at the time it was purchased

If thats the case the AMD system would be better for you/her even though it is down on processing power vs the 330M. :)

Yea, but how much does the processing power affect it's performance overall? obviously comparing AMD to Intel is like trying to have sex with a girl using only my ass... I can't do it

So somebody needs to lend me a strap on, and help me figure this out

I mean if the deficit isn't too bad, it could be possible to perform a minor overclock using software would it not?

What is this laptop going to be used for exactly? Is it essential to buy a laptop, £500 can build a beast of a desktop, hexacore and everything.

Either way for a laptop you're not going to get a gaming experience, so I would put the majority of the emphasis on the processor and ram.

I would recommend getting a 64-bit operating system, either Vista or Windows 7. There is virtually no restriction for drivers or software on a 64-bit OS.

A overclock on a laptop isnt going to happen. For everyday tasks i.e browsing the net and word processing you do not need additional processing power anyways.

Well they only come with 64-bit anyways, so yea... I gotta :p

Thing is like I said, I'm limited to PC World, and they sell proper shitty components so there would be no point building a desktop anyways... but yea, its for college so it has to be a laptop

I think it's just gonna be simple word processing, watching movies, and like I say the odd game of Sims here and there ;) So yea, it's good shit!

Like all UK people with good computer knowledge will say stay the f*ck away from PC World for computers/laptops those laptops don't seem worth the money they are selling for in my opinion maybe the triple core but the gpu is really weak.
If your gf wants a laptop to play sims then i would reconmend getting a decent GPU
If you can buy laptop from somewhere else then i would reconmend these:

I just saw and that 5551 is 500 in euro money so i gotta agree with kuro, the HD4250 and Intel HD are only good for HD video's and very very light gaming, the sims won't run on it decently, and for instance, fallout 3 on the lowest setting is only like 15 fps, unless you buy it at like 350 bucks in US dollars or lower like I did and use it only for word its not worth it.\

Also the webcam on it stutters and the mic is terrible.

Helpful post, at least read the op. He can only go to pcworld as I presume thats who is honoring the warranty.

Dual core Athlon 3gb, HD 5450

Sorry but some of you yanks are so ignorant, no offense meant to the majority but I am so sick of people referring to £ POUNDS as euros, we have had pounds here in the UK for 100+ years before the goddam euro came out.

Wow that's a nice graphics card in that laptop for the price, thanks for the link (; What I worry about is only having 3GB ram on Windows 7... hmmm :( I really need somebody to break down how exactly the AMD processors compare to the Intel ones, cos I have no experience with AMD at all. Is that possible, anybody? :)

The other thing I'd worry about is battery life, with a laptop that has a fairly good GPU like that... it needs to last a day at college ideally (not gaming obviously, just in general)

Erm, just Sims 2 and Sims 3 really, that's all she plays (; So if it can run them, we're onto a winner ^_^ Obviously she's gonna have Microsoft Office and that too, but that's a given that it'll run them just fine

Look if its for the mrs, she will be well pleased, and I will bet being as its a replacement for one that died, its probably better than the one its replacing anyway. Yes the 5450 will be better than the 4250 by quite a bit. The 4250 isn't much better than onboard really only it handles video better than the intel solutions.

What, why are you worried about having 3gb with win 7?? no issues here.

The 5450 will definately be better than the 4250, even for the sims, they aren't that demanding but anything lower will struggle to run them.

I'm just very RAM conscious after the whole fiasco of Vista using so much more RAM etc, and I've not really looked into Windows 7 so I figured it was probably the same, if not a little bit less (as I hear it's a lot better than Vista)

I have just noticed that the one with the Tri-Core but lower graphics also only has up to 3 hours battery, compared to the Dual-Core with the 5450 having 5 hours battery... I guess it's just a tossup between these two laptops really :)

Wow man relax and that laptop does look pretty decent, the 5450 will run sims 3 on medium at 1024x768 according to notebookcheck well most of the low/budget GPU will run it at medium and get 30fps or so at that resolution but hey worth experimenting the settings.
And 3gb of memory isn't an issue in my opinion if it is then replace that 1GB ram for another 2gb then you have 4GB,just switch it back to 1gb if you need to go through warranty lol.
And if thats 32bit the most it use is 3GB anyway.

What is it for? is a very valid question. If for college, do you mean for at home college work, or for in.class and lecture note taking. If the former, then suggestions given already are good. If the later, I would buy a netbook which is much more transportable and with the remaining credit get an iPhone.
