I know I need to set up the networking connection but I'm doing something wrong can anyone give me a walk through. My kids are tired of saving to a usb drive and walking down stairs lazy asses.

Setting up printer sharing between Vista and XP can be a pain, especially if you are going between 64-bit and 32-bit.

I'd start by connecting the printer to the laptop directly, and installing the proper drivers.
Then share the printer from the desktop, you can do this by right clicking on the printer and going into properties.
Then browse to the desktop from network places on the laptop.
Find the printer, and right click on it and tell it to connect.
Cross your fingers and hope.

You will also have to have a user accnt, with password, set up on the vista machine.
When you try to access the printer from your xp across your network.Vista will require you to login with a user name and password to allow access to it's printer.

What make/model printer?
If it is a HP; a couple of the models are real finicky about being wired and wireless, some won't even go there. A couple need firmware updates to get it done right.

Here is a decent guide at HP.

What Greasemonkey said should also be on the XP machine. It needs to be passworded.

Go to Control Panel, find User Account, click on 'change your password'.
Then input the new password and click ok.

Sorry , I think, I read wrong.:slap: Are you tring to connect wirelessly to the printer on the desktop and the printer is connected to the desktop thru usb or something?

Quoted from MS website:
Sharing a printer

If you have a printer attached to one of your computers, you can print to it from any computer connected to your wireless network. To share a printer, follow these steps:

1. Log on to computer that has the printer attached to it.

2. Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.

3. Click the arrow button next to Printer sharing, click Turn on printer sharing, and then click Apply.

4. Click the arrow button next to Password protected sharing, click Turn off password protected sharing, and then click Apply.

Note

If you have password-protected sharing turned on, people will need a user account with a password on your computer to access your printer.

To access the printer from any computer on the network, follow these steps:

1. Open Network by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Network.

2. Double-click the icon for the computer that has the printer attached to it.

3. Double-click the icon for the printer. Windows will automatically add the printer to your computer and install the printer driver.
