Need help cooling my laptop

Yesterday my nt-h1 has arrived and I immediately repaste my laptop but it seems like the temps have no differences after all. The previous thermal paste was mx-4.

You can see the pic above that most of the internal components like vrms, ram and the others are left uncooled. I was planning to put thermal pads on my laptop and put it on vrm and ram connecting to the heatsink pipe or should I just make the thermal pads reach the metal back of the laptop's case so it'll move the heat to the case. What do you guys think?

anyone?

Unless you are in a very hot climate or into serious overclocking, you should be able to leave the RAM and VRMs as they are right now. Is the rig overheating on you?

You may be able to undervolt your CPU using throttlestop, if you have an intel based system and unlocked processor.

Another factor to mitigate heat would be to run an external cooler underneath the laptop to get better airflow and the heat out.

The VRM and RAM will be fine without any changes, for the CPU, a cooling pad underneath the laptop is a easy option. Also you can check if the vents on the outer case for air intake is limiting the airflow, I once had a laptop with poor vent design so I cut that area into a hole to allow maximum airflow into the fan and the temperatures dropped about 10 degrees.

I've undervolted the cpu already, I managed to do -200mv on core and -100mv on cache and yet the temps arent improving but only the performances.


Another factor to mitigate heat would be to run an external cooler underneath the laptop to get better airflow and the heat out.
I had a cheap cooler but in the end it doesn't help the airflow as much as I expected.

IMHO, If it's already giving you a headache, and you have the chance to return it, do it. It's not worth to fix a brand new laptop or any product.
It's not giving me any headache at all, I just wanted to maximize it's potential.

Both. The idle temps used to reach 40c but then after a year it can get as low as 46c while the under load reaches up to 90c when playing.

For laptop this is actually quite the norm to be that hot given the constrain of laptop cooling. As long as you are NOT throttling or it NOT passed shutdown temperature it is good enough.

If you laptop have a metal base that is great. With thick enough thermal pad you can turn it into a heatsink. It would give you a massive cooling boost even plastic bases laptop like mine with this mod give great cooling. Only down side the base is hot and could no longer be a "laptop" on your lap.

The other thing you can do is cut a hole for fan intake replacing with a tiny metal grill for maximum cooling though this mod would void warranty.

That's what I've been planning for but what if I connect the thermal pads with the heatpipes instead of using the metal back cover?

I would also add another ram stick so you get dual channel memory for better performance. :)

Wouldn't modifying it in any way make you loose your warranty on it?

Are you saying that after lowering your core voltage, you are seeing better performance?

Adjusting the core voltage will not effect performance of your machine (until you reach the margins on both sides) so it must be something else that's contributing factor to the better performance. At least if I understand you correctly.


Not sure, but if it does I can easily remove it after.
What are your expectations with this cooling upgrade? As in goals? Laptops naturally run hot, it's just a fact of life when you cram a computer in a confined space. I don't want to bash your expectations but do keep them in check. In all likelihood, you wont see much of an improvement in temps, no matter what you do. Occasionally, you can seek out a better OEM heatsink/cpu cooler from a higher end / newer laptop and retrofit in your machine. I know people used to do this with the Lenovo T61s and it does make a world of difference. Just not sure if there is anything to upgrade to with your model.

Yeah, undervolting usually lowers the voltage and most laptops usually have power limit on how much power you can draw to them depends on the manufacturers to prevent laptops from overheating yet they make the performances limited by limiting the power draw. With that, making the cpu almost impossible to run at it's full potential.

The expectations aren't much but I feel like theres more room to improve the temperatures on the laptop as right now I can't afford to buy a new one.

Yes, the cpu is designed to run at 3.9 ghz all 4 cores but it gets throttled during heavy load due to the power limitation. Luckily, I can use throttlestop to adjust the Turbo Power Limit to remove the limitation but it gets thermal throttle.


What CPU are you running in this laptop? Have you confirmed higher performance with benchmarks? If so, I'd like to see them.
I7-8650U. Usually the cpu runs at 2.2 ghz when drawing 15 watt and then after I undervolted it can reach 2.6 Ghz.Unfortunately, I haven't benchmarked it yet.

edit : just realised the clockspeed got lower it used to be 2.8 ghz undervolted. do my performances degrade over time?

Double check and make sure your undervolt is still being applied. Many laptops have had automatic BIOS updates applied during the last year. This has disabled CPU voltage control.

Double check and make sure your undervolt is still being applied. Many laptops have had automatic BIOS updates applied during the last year. This has disabled CPU voltage control.

I knew the internal components are heating inside the laptop. After putting the thermal pads it only works when the metal case of the laptop is cold and it reaches back to normal temps when gaming but then I put ice pack below it and the idle temps are much colder than before.

edit : sadly, the ice pack could only last for few hours. i might need to think of a new way to cool down the vrm
