Need help from the AMD guys

Hey folks been out of AMD forever. Im running a system with an AM3 (FX-6300) in it and today I was working on the system and realized that I dont know much about the current hierarchy of AMD systems.

My question is what is the socket build out now for AMD? I heard AM3+ was getting phased out and FM1 died an early death. Can anyone shed some light on the current state of AMD sockets and which CPU families have alot going for them? Is their currently a line of CPUs that doesn't seem EOL yet? an architecture perhaps?

AMD has pretty much been treading water since the FX release with AM3+ the only thing going for them right now is their APU's for budget systems.

FM2+ and AM1 are the latest AFAIK

Most of the sockets/cpu's are going EOL but that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad- AMD keeps dropping prices to stay in the market.

Which one is mroe aspected to what AM3(+) was? would a platform AMD side mean a switch to FM2?

We think Amd has something coming in 2016. As far as nowdays Am3+ is the top dog for Amd. Zen looks promising though so I am staying where I am until it drops.

^^^THIS! Which is why they're more interested in putting out some early hype on the next Xen architecture, which I would look at instead. Very tentatively look at.

In terms of CPU power:

AM1 < FM2+ < AM3+

FM2+ sports the most current AMD designs (Excavator, Steamroller) though, AM3+ only got Bulldozer and Piledriver. AM1 is for low power (<25w) CPUs.

Yeah, AM1 is low power, great for office tasks and HTPC. FM2+ and Kaveri is the latest tech from AMD, but it is still a year old at this point. Plust FM2+ is mid-range only, only 4 Core, no L3 cache. However, AM3+ is still the high end for AMD, up to 8 cores and decent amount of L3.

At some point Carrizo is supposed to come out(based on a new excavator core) but not word on what socket it would be(not AM3+ for sure, I'm hopeful it will be FM2+).

Excavator will be the last core revision based on Bulldozer, after that we will be getting a whole new architecture.

The good thing is that in 2012 AMD hired back the CPU architect that was responsible for the K8(Athlon 64) architecture. He's supposedly been the lead architect on the Zen architecture, so I actually have high hopes for it.

AM3+ albeit dated currently still is their main high-end CPU platform.
FM2+ currently is their main APU platform, with max 4 core CPU's.
AM1 currently is their main low end platform, with quad core APU's with a max TDP of 25Watts.

If you are looking for an upgrade within your current platform, upgrading to a 8320(E)/8370(E) or something similar is probably your best bet.
If you want to stay AMD but upgrade away from AM3+ you'll have to wait till sometime next year (I'm guessing H2).They are planning on bringing out a totally new platform with a brand new architechture (Zen) that's rumored to be a lot better and more competitive both performance and powerwise.
