hey people i was thinking of upgrading my 2-3 year old rig now :) my question now is
should i go with amd or intel? i would like a 2500K but i only have 350 to spend and i looked at the fx 6100 and its cheaper.. i heard it didn't do so good against the 2500k though so is there any other am3's maybe an phenom II x6 that does close as good but doesnt cost as much money?

i5 2400? Just $190. Get a good, cheap H67 board at around $110. So that's $300 already. You could easily get 8GB DDR3 RAM at less than $50.

only drawback that I have seen about that build(I'm using that same RAM and mobo with a 2600k) is that the 2nd PCIe slot is only *4 speed instead of *8 or *16. If your not going to SLI or crossfireX, it's a none issue. I've had this board and RAM for around 2 months now with absolutely no problems, and I am running crossfireX.

there will be a increase in performance, but to be honest, I upgraded from a Q9650 OC'ed to 4GHZ, and except for my results in crunching, I haven't really seen any real benefits from the upgrade(going from 80fps in games to around 100fps is kinda meaningless in my eyes), unlike when I upgraded from a Q6600 to the Q9650. The Q9650 OC'ed to 4ghz was still plenty powerful for my daily use. Oh, and I was only running 4 gigs DDR2 800 RAM with the Q9650.

<-- extreme gaming here and low fps pisses me off... the cpu isn't the only reason im upgrading my mobo can't run my gpu under pci express x16 and runs it at x2 so whatever helps... I also do game console emulation *ps2 and gamecube/wii* ps2 works wii meh 35 fps in most games so i guess ill get a good boost

Intel has much power than AMD, but AMD is more affordable

heh, waiting for IB wouldn't hurt. Prices aren't going to go up on SB, if anything IB will cause SB prices to drop alittle.

Enjoy, I've been satisfied with my CPU/MOBO/RAM combo.

Oh, if you plan on OC'ing any(Gigabyte has a OC'ing program that will OC your 2500k to 4.2ghx with just 1 click), your going to need a better heatsink. I'd suggest a Corsair A50 or A70. The A50 I have cools my 2600k to my satisfaction at 4ghz, but gets alittle warm at 4.2ghz.

75'c is the number I stay under.

But to be honest, I wish this ran alittle cooler than it is. I'd feel alot better running around the low 60'ties when crunching, instead of bouncing up to the low 70'ties every now and then. I'll probably invest in a H70 in the not to distant future.

Save More Money before making any purchases, then go to newegg/thinkgeek/amazon/microcenter/frys and build 4 machines, 2 top end and 2 mid range off those sites and see what the prices are.

From Your system specs I believe You can upgrade to the 1090T BE or 1100T BE and add another 8 gigs of ram to your machine, and Add a sound card and just be fine with it all and wait 3 more years.

I'm pretty sure the Hyper can handle 4ghz, and to be honest, unless your doing something like crunching, anything more than 4ghz on a SB I5 or I7 is over-kill(not like that is a bad thing)

You could always upgrade the CPU and get a Sound card. Im assuming you are running Windows 7. But I see your going to try to overclock it... Good Luck is all I can say.
