Need some AMD overclokers who are familiar with Trixx or other AMD OC tools, here's a step by step rundown of what I have done so far...

  • Got a Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X OC (950mhz boost on 2nd bios)
  • I can OC with AMD OD to 1070mhz core and 1575mhz RAM
  • Try to OC core more than 1070 and get a driver lockup and recover
  • No voltage control in amd OD (power limiter already set to +20%)
  • Installed Trixx and set to 1600mhz RAM, 1100mhz core, +20 power limiter and VDDC to 1100-1150
  • Run benchmark (3dMark11) crashes with driver fault
  • Trixx core and mem clocks stay the same though VDDC always returns to 975
  • GPUZ never reports any change in VDDC, always stays at 1.035v regardless of settings in Trixx

Hopefully that will give you an idea of what my issues are, just a few things....

In AMD OD I can hit 1070core 1575mem (top clock) with no voltage adjustment.

I would like to hit 1100+ core so think I need to be tweaking voltage. Is this what VDDC is for in Trixx?

Why doesn't GPU-Z notice change in VDDC? Why does Trixx return to stock 975 VDDC when driver recovers?

TL;DR

I want to hit higher than 1070mhz core which is the highest stock voltage OC on my 7950. How do I do it?

BuMp! I would like to know the answer to this also, as I have just received my Sapphire 7950.

Haven't installked TriXX yet.

How long were you testing at 1070? Just one 3dmark run?

I know your PSU is sufficient. my 7950 does great on my 650w.

I have ran quite a few games including Metro, Sleeping Dogs, FEAR ( just for shits and giggles on benchmark mode) and several 3DMark11 runs with no crashing at 1070/1575

Ok will give Afterburner a go, what's your default vram voltage? I seem to be able to run 1600 stock volts

My Sapphire 7950 is still throwing up driver crashes at 1080 core all the way up to 1250v??? WTF, it will do 1070 on stock but wont budge from there even with more volts?

That is really odd. Have you tried something like furmark on 1070? If it comes to the point that you have no idea, I would check long term stability on 1070. If it survives, it looks like it may be a poorly fabricated chip.

I more or less have the same Video card you do. I will do 1070 and up this friday or saturday and post my results.

All part of the silicon gamble from what I understand, mine has artifacts if I go past 1125 core. So I leave it at 1100.

Though I have read some people getting 1300 with this same card... so yeah silicon gamble is all.

OK, update, my core clock seems to be affected directly by my memory clock, which I didn't think was the case, however in benching some more I have realised that lowering the seemingly stable mem speed of 1575 directly affects what I can OC on the core, I thought they were seperate entities these days?

So to cut a long message short, I have broken 1100 core by reducing my vram to stock 1250 and am now at 1140 on the core, also seems stable with mem at 1400 at that core speed. I am slowly raising both to find an equilibrium and will be back, endless runs of 3dMark11........ YAY :rockout:

I personally prefer trixx. Much simpler and cleaner interface. I could reach the exact same overclock with it that I could with AB between 2 msi 6950's and a saphire 7970.

I know you don't, hence I said maybe a PM might be the better way to go, I am sorry I double posted, though posts were relevant and making different posts with different findings as editing doesn't always have the desired effect. Hope you have enjoyed the bulk of the comments, am at 10K with 1200 core :D :toast:

I did not realize the mem and core were interlaced either.

I may lower my mem down to 1425 and try for 1200 core now. :toast:

IIRC mem speed has little to no effect on benchmark scores/overall performance, what i believe you are seeing/experiencing is the limitation/s of the VRM circuitry...

Nice clocks just the same! :toast:

All this talk of overclocking 79xx has started me thinking if finally pushin my cards and see what they can do. They're comfortably sitting at 1050/1500 now, but that's not nearly good enough right?

As soon as my wife gets off my PC (looking for crap on Craigslist; she has a phone and a laptop, but needs my pc :banghead:), I'm going to reinstall 12.11 and start pushing my cards, hopefully with good numbers.
